Why do you raise chickens?

Because I thought it would be fun. And I was right (I remind myself every time I have to go thaw ice and collect eggs on negative degrees winter days)!

It started with us walking past chick bins at rural king and reading the minimum order number. We knew chickens were allowed in our town because a neighbor down the street had some and we had recently bought a house. Which got the gears turning. Then we ordered some chicks from a hatchery and we were hooked.

We've stuck with it because the fresh eggs taste  so much better than store bought eggs. Even early on we chose to raise some chickens for meat because we loved knowing that our food was treated well while they were alive. We can (usually) buy eggs and meat cheaper than we can raise them and have been aware of that from the start. But we're animal lovers at our core and knowing our food is raised without the horrific conditions of factory farming is a privilege we are thankful to have.
