Why does Pasty Butt kill a chick?

I lost my favorite silkie to this...Sadly, I wasn't in time to save her... What causes it to kill the chick?

raised a lot of chicks over the years and never lost one to pasty butt. always put sugar in their water for the first few days. look at the chicks closely for the first week. the ones with pasty butt need attention immediately.
 
If you put a teaspoon of unfiltered apple cider vinegar (the type with sediment) in a quart waterer, that seems to help with pasty butt. Shipped chicks get this more than ones you hatch at home.

I thought the same, but I was sadly out of town the morning it happened... I came home that afternoon and my family left the body for me to examine. She had a large clump of poop on her butt, but other than that, nothing appeared abnormal. One person said that she wasn't eating the night before, but with a little encouragement, she started...
