Why don't my emoticons work properly?

Why is it the emoticons show up as text more often then they do as icons?

While you are composing they show up as text. After you submit, they show up as an emoticon. Be sure to add a "space" after the emoticon. If you follow on with text immediately, you confuse the browser.

What kind of dog is in your avatar? Looks like an ACD and is VERY cute!

Thanks for the advice, I think it was the space that was screwing it up.
