Why have a rooster? new Pg 10 video pg 13

Thank you for your story. I am a first time back yard flock owner. When I ordered my chicks I ordered girls only. My husband wanted to get a rooster( he grew up with one) and I did not want a rooster to deal with, we have small children. I was concerned about the actions of a rooster to the children. As it turned out my husband got his wish after all, because one of our pullets turned out to be a rooster. I was not concerned until the rooster "Captain Ducky"became aggressive to my 3 year old son. I wanted to get rid of him and I told my husband "I told you so". Then as fate would have it Ducky became ill and was almost pecked to death by the hens. I felt so bad for him that i brought him in the house and I nursed him back to health. I would hold him in my lap and eye dropper feed him water and gatorade for a fews days until he was able to eat on his own. He spent 3 weeks in the house, because he was unable to stand. We have bounded together because of this and I now have a good undeerstanding of him. I now know that it is his nature to do everything he can for his girls....That is his job! My job is to protect my children by using compromise.

I put Ducky out to roam first thing in the morning for a few hours and then put him in a pen so that my children can have time to play "worry free"

I am a changed person...I will never be with out a rooster! I enjoy watching him be so sweet to his girls and if I am not on time in the morning he lets me know.

He is a Pet Quality Blue Orpington.

You could have fooled me. He looks like a champion. A champion of the heart. I'd take one of him over 50 prize winners that couldn't do what he did, any day.

And btw, good shooting. You had one chance and your aim was true.

Well I got Lancelot to use for breeding and he is perfect to me. But at about 6 months old, red bleed through started popping up in his hackles...and then more and more....So I could not use him for breeding. But he has a forever home...I love the boy and would gladly take 10 more of him.

What is red bleed through?

LH, my dear friend, that's the bestest roo story I've heard in ages! Shades of your magnificent Thor! And I'm sure Thor is looking down from heaven, with a smile of approval on his beak.

For those of you who never got to read the stories of Thor and his "Tallest Girl" you owe it to yourself to track down all posts by Cetawin to find them. I guarantee that if you take the time to read about the life and times of Thor, you too will be inspired to have a boy just like him. He, and his mama Cetawin, are who inspired me to keep my five boys, in the hopes of coming within even spitting distance of that magnificent boy!

But, there will never be another Thor. Others may come close, but there simply never will be another...........

Though I think Lancelot made a quantum leap forward towards measuring up to the bar set by Thor! Atta boy Lance! Ya done your mama proud today! And atta girl LH! Great shooting there lady! But I'm not surprised. Considering what was at stake, I would expect nothing less than a perfect and clean kill from you!

Now, go give that awesome boy of yours a great big plate of blueberry pancakes! He's earned it! And give him a hug from his Auntie Amy too! Tell him how proud and in awe of him that I am!

Red bleed through is a throwback from previous generations of breeding for color.

Amy, he got grapes and baked chicken, yellow rice and peas for dinner. He is not Thor but he is a great boy in his own right. He did Thor proud I am sure.
