Hi does anyone have any ideas why my egg shells have gone from brown to a near on snow white . I have 12 ex battery hens and for the first 12 months I had a nice brown shell but in the last 3weeks they have slowly got lighter and lighter and now I have pure white shells . I haven't changed their diet but I have just managed to clear a red mite infestation could this have any thing to do with it

from washington state glad you joined us!

In the beginning of spring chickens that lay brown eggs are dark and as the months go by the do began to fade and become lighter this is normal and then when spring comes back around they will be darker again.

Hello and :welcome

White eggs become more common the older the hen is.
Good on you for raising ex battery hens! That's so cool :thumbsup

Thanks for the reply it's been very rewarding seeing the battery hens getting back to full health with all there feathers . Poor things barely knew how to walk when we got them and got scared when they stood on the grass
