Why I am Vegan

I find it interesting (but not surprising) that I don't see one person flaming people who eat meat on the 2 threads started to flame this one, but I see a lot of people who don't agree with the vegan lifestyle here having a flame fest toward the OP and those who see her point of view.(again not surprised).

Makes you wonder.

I suggest staying out of threads that don't fit your way of life.

Vegan MEN? that is funny:lol:
Here's a little something to think about. In the Bible man was a eater of fruits, vegetables and herbs. After the fall they were told they were to work by the sweat of their brow. Then they were told to eat meat...

When you feel you are better or intellectually superior to someone or a group you usually find those persons to hold the view that being reserve or silent is a sign of intelligence. I would much rather be surrounded by people who speak their mind and wear their views on their shirt sleeves.

The rules of BYC are fairly plain and everyone agreed to abide by them when they joined. Since many views on foods are akin to religious belief, and therefore, hot buttons, the rule below can be made to apply to those as well:

12. We strongly discourage religious and political topics and reserve the right to delete them at our discretion. The topics of religion and politics should be confined to the “Random Ramblings” section of the forum.

* Respect that people may have a different political, religious, philosophical and cultural background than you.

3. No Flaming (verbally attacking people or groups of people - e.g. a profession, an organization, a company.)
4. No Trolling (posting to provoke others, luring them to flame or rant). Trolling is sometimes done involuntarily, so please be considerate when posting.

Keep all the above rules in mind before you hit the submit button. Report any post that you feel violates those rules.

I have read all the replies, but my question was never really answered.

So, a vegan raises chickens, gets eggs, sells all eggs. Just has chickens as pets? Right?

And to imply that a man is less manly for not eating meat is beyond my understanding. It is just ridiculous. That is saying that a woman is less for not having children or.... you know. Just beyond.

I don't care if someone eats meat or not and have said that in other threads. Generally speaking I feel rather judged because I eat meat and they don't. Both here on BYC and in real life.

My question was a legit one....how can someone for moral reasons who chooses not to eat meat then turn around a use the other by-products such as leather from that same animal?

To answer your question my vegan friends(yes I have them) tell me they raise them to give them a good life which means others don't but I over look that to maintain a friendship. They usually give the eggs away or throw them away. If a vegan will admit it or just answer the question truthfully everything they do revolves around their beliefs and that is just a fact not inflammatory.

As far as men being less manly as a vegan first it was a joke, second most but not all men that are vegans are A-sexual by definition and prefer to take the reverse role as put forth in a traditional marriage unless they are single and have not found a mate that agrees to their wants. Again these are my observations not meant to be inflammatory.

People will always judge you for one thing or another. I hope you can come to the place where you realize that the judgment of others has no power over you, unless you let it.

Your question is legit, but I can't answer it because I am not vegan. I have, however, lived long enough to understand that peoples belief systems are sometimes rather nuanced, and it does not always stand to reason that if you believe this, you must believe that.

Personally, I have NO problem with a vegan or vegatarian diet, I love to eat all of it and that is my choice. I think what a lot of people (correct me if I am wrong) run into and their frustrations start with the fact that a lot of vegans/vegatarians insist that their way is the only way to live or else we are all gonna die from some sort of disease from being meat eaters. I know I am generalizing that statement and in truth there is a lot broader and even more forceful views in this catagory.

For me personally, I feel I am basically a good person who chooses a healthier way of life, but I do include meat in my diet and just choose to raise my own. I have had protesters show up at our driveway after we did a 4-H event and I live in the BOONDOCKS. I see what the kids go through at fair if they enter a market animal.

So it is truley a case of being more like a religion like someone else said who warned this is a touchy subject. I believe diet choices should not be forced based on someone elses opinion and reasons. And people, like me, who have had bad experiences with people who choose a vegan or vegatarian lifestyle gets fed up being the bad guy. It will not stop what I am doing, however and I wish both parties meat eaters and non meat eaters realize this fact.

I truly believe that we as omnivores have a variety in our own genetic make-up that determines what type of nutrition our bodies will thrive on and I believe wholeheartedly that is the avenue an individual should decide for themselves. The problem is a lot of people who don't want to eat meat for political reasons, often don't thrive on an all vegan diet and I have had personal experience with that in our own relatives.

My biggest problem is being a hypocrite! If you choose a life style of do no harm to animals, don't pick and choose what makes your life more bearable. I see more protesters that wear leather shoes or drive nice cars, sometimes with real leather seats, etc... and that is what personally sticks in my craw.

I think as a species we need to look at the real problems with our food systems, here at home and nationally. We have bigger fish to fry then just to eat meat or not to eat meat. We are only one generation and look at us, what will it be like in 5 more generations???
JMO for what it is worth.
