Why I gave up gardening

My chickens got the very first tomato, cuke, green bean, and now have three wildflower garden dust baths, they think they own the place. My solution, I'm building a 4 and a half foot fence. I started building it a couple weeks ago after spending about 800 in materials I set up my first section of fence and went and sat down to take a break and look at it from a distance to see what it looked like. As my wife and I were admiring the masterpiece one of my hens flew up and perched on the fence, I'll teach them!!!

Well, at least I'll have a pretty fence..

Yall just don't know how to make good use of your hens! I put mine to work "tilling" the garden for about a month before I planted. Then I turned up all the crossties that separate my garden from the "yard at large" and the hens loooooooved that, we even found two baby snakes for some BIG treats!! THEN I built a hoop house over my garden using the afore-mentioned crossties and a cattle panel, plus some chicken wire. I fully intend to "let" the chickens mow the garden back under when the season is up.
Make use of yer resources I say!!

Just fence them out of the good stuff.

finally found a use for chooks in the garden; put them on a big patch of unwanted chinese cabbages that no one will pick cause they look 'so pretty', leave them for ten minutes then ya have a tilled patch of earth plus some fertilizer

they had a ball, and it saves me the arguments, and the pulling out

Recently my chickens (10 freerangers) have discovered my sliding glass door (stes up to it etc.) leads into our living room. they peck at the door. my husband saw them do that the other day! laughed and laughed! by the time i got my camera they left to find some bugs..

Is that shade cloth you have over your beds?

Yes, I get it at Gardener's Supply Co. They call it "garden fabric" on their site. It's too hot here in the summer for me not to use it. I switch it out for visqueen in the winter.

We let the chickens free range the whole backyard in the fall. They do a lovely job for us. Then we fence off half the yard and garden on one side and they have the other side with both lawn and yard. My DS tills in their part and the girls love it.

All the weeds go over the fence for them to eat and scratch. They also get all the garden scraps. Most of them are content on their side of the fence but a few fly over to the garden side. They haven't hurt anything yet (knock on wood) but we have found eggs outside so they may be trying to raise a family (won't happen - no rooster)
