Why is 1 inch chicken wire bad?

Wow, what kind of snake was it?? We've got no snakes, racoons or skunks in the Yukon but lots of other predators. Right now they've closed a few campgrounds up here cause of bear problems.
Black snakes. They eat poisionous snakes and are good for the environment etc but not in my yard! It's a bad year for snakes. Two people I have talked to this week had them in their house! One was the girl at the feed store who had one on her kitchen counter behind the microwave. She freaked and all her friends laughed at her because she handes lots of snakes at the store. I'm over them and careful everywhere I walk and am constantly checking the bird netting which has fouled two attempts to get at the chicks so far in their nursery.

Wow, I bet they're huge. I'll have to google em to see what they look like.

I think that a lot of you are confused on technical terms. I could be confusing and cost you more money than needed

Hardware cloth is a woven product and then galvanized after weaving. I have never seen it available in a mesh larger than 3/4" square. It is also generally made of lighter gauge wire. It tends to be higher priced by weight and width than other products.

Welded wire is wires laid on one another and then welded in place. It is available as a glavanized before welding (which compromises the galvanizing at the junction of the wires) also as galvanized after welding (the junctions are recovered with zinc in this process) and as coated (with PVC). It is available in heavier wire size and is economical.

As far as "what is strong enough" I have seen a mild mannered Labrador Retriever crunch and get through the 11 ga wires in a chain link kennel . He was ****** because he wasn't taken along on a trip to the pond across the road with his two favorite 8 and 10 year old boys.

1 inch chicken wire also allows rats and mice to eat your chicken feed and bring unlimited disease to you and your chickens. Your dog is at risk too, if it gets bitten. To top it off, they attract more predators. It's too bad because I think chicken wire looks nicer (so country like). Hardware cloth is reminiscent of a prison.

I think chicken wire is a significant factor in cities outlawing chickens. Chicken wire coops, that are so common, attract rats. Who wants that in their neighborhood, much less within 25 feet of their house.

I also think leaving wild bird feeders out at night is asking for a rat/mice infestation.
