Why is it always the ugly chick?

All my were purposely picked because I thought they were beautiful and I liked there egg colors Except the production black that I grabbed just because I wanted an even number of chicks and that's the breed the feed store had. From day 1 she's been extra lovey. Comes running when she sees you. Will fly up to your shoulder in search of treats. She's like a little dog. I love her but wish one of the other breeds had her personality. She's definitely the family favorite.
Picture of sweet Valentina.

Ah, it's almost always the boys that act like that in my experience. How old are they? :pop

In barred birds... the white stripes being wider than black means male... but I always have a hard time judging when feathers are still coming in, and I don't see anything screaming cockerel. :)

They are 5 weeks old. No signs of her being a rooster.
The thought crossed my mind when I first got her because of how cocky she was.

Probably some barred rock in the production black mix (seems like an odd name if all the birds are barred)... they (BR) are always my head hens if I have them in my flock. They are fairly confident, some individuals more than others. Talk about cocky... my BR hen even started crowing last year!:smack

There is somthing that seems a little softer and sweeter about her face. could just be angle but she doesn't have that one step back from dino raptors look that many chickens have. Anyway just accept it and enjoy it there is never any gaurantee she will stay like that. one day you'll go out and have to catch her to cuddle. many of mine are like that now act like I'm gona killem and they know it cuz they seen it. Then once I got em total snuggle bugs. And some will be cuddle bugs then while not becoming mean they just aren't at all intrested in you beyoind the feed and treats you throw out for em no more hand eats maybe not even getting close enough to let ya get a hand on. I too much prefer one that comes to me for actual companionship rather than just for treats. All they seem to want these days is scratch I call em my little mobsters or my mob of extortionists. cuz they all mob me when I walk towards the coop somtimes I"ll throw out just a lil bit cuz I do like em. But not too often and certainly not much they get their good scratchin when it's time to close the run un for the night it is bait to make them no dally getting in and maybe in just a little earlier than they would like. But I wanna get em in before the boogers start hunting for the evening.
