Why is it easier to buy a dog then save one?

Im glad i not the only one who has problems with the system. The fact the one pound would rather let those dogs sit there then have a long happy life with me because they didn't like my vet is just dumb. I almost got a boxer from oklahoma. The lady got a new job. My friend took her terrier. The last i heard she may have found a way to keep him though.

Well Ill just keep hunting down that perfect new family member. Shes out there some where. Yes, i want a girl as i have two boys and one girl now. Need to even out the numbers a bit;)

Here's one of my boys. Ohhh the suffering! LOL

Check with veteranarians offices all over your area. Get on their list of homeless dogs. People bring dogs to the vet and don't come back for them because they don't want to pay the bill. My Great Pyrenees sisters were abandoned by people that brought them to the vet and didn't have money to paid for spaying them so they just didn't come back. Vet let me take the dogs and pay the spaying cost. He said people do that all the time. Two of the best chicken dogs I've ever owned and super friendly to kids.

Wanted to share positive stories....about shelters and rescue groups...

All my indoor pets are rescue pets. I also work with a different rescue organization. My 2 dogs I rescued BEFORE the shelter took them.

My rabbit I got from a Humane Society in Northern Virginia (Manassas). All I had to do was fill out a form and show "proof" of address and that my apartment allowed pets (which it did not but I made it up well). Rabbits don't have to be spayed or neutered.

My cat I got from the local humane society. She was 45.00 bucks and came with a certificate to get her spayed when she was old enough. I had to fill out an application that had basic information. I did have to agree she would not be declawed (which is extremely inhumane anyway) and because of my proximity to a major highway (500 ft) would be indoor. I can't remember if my husband HAD to be present or just went with me. Also, after I agreed to adopt I had to wait 24 hours just in case I changed my mine. I even wrote on the app. that I had a severe cat allergy but didn't care........

Now, I also volunteer with a rescue group different from the above. Some dogs have to have a fenced yard (hound dogs and the ones that tend to "run off" but others don't. The adoption fee is about 60 bucks. They are either already spayed or you get a voucher to get them spayed if they are too young. It is a state LAW that they are spayed/neutered. We do have an adoption form and really are just trying to make sure the people are right for the animal as most the animals are in foster care and we tend to want them to be with compatible families. It is relatively painless to get a pet with us- and we do adopt out already spayed/neutered dogs to other states ect. if you are willing to drive to get them...but they aren't temperment tested and sometimes come with some "issues" nothing major but couldn't promise with livestock....

Around here you rabbits must be fixed and there is a rule as to how many pet rabbits you can have in the city.

The vet idea is a good one.

I live 20 miles from the nearest animal shelter and dog pound and 35 miles from the nearest Humane Society which in another state. I recently spoke to a deputy friend of mine about the idea of creating a position with the county as an Animal Control Officer. He said we lived in an area where our county doesn't meet the requirements. He said animals running lose, causing damage to property and getting hit was a problem and how it takes from their time as law officers to answer animal calls. We are looking into this to see what can be done. I've always wanting to be in a field dealing with animals. I'm a breeder, but I only have 10 dogs. I love them all, spoil them and give them the best life possible. They were all given to me from an over crowded breeder and I saved them from a life of hell. I have a diploma in Animal Science and I am well known at my vet's office! I've seen all sides of getting and having animals. I've seen rich people whom I thought could take good care of their dogs totally blind to the obvious signs of ill health and destress.
I don't know where I'm going with this only that even as a breeder I would rather someone save a dog from a shelter then for them to buy one of my puppies. I've sent several indecisive buyers to the shelter. The best dog I ever had growing up came from the pound!

I know this is a serious subject, but I did have to laugh at one thought I had while reading the posts....

"People actually go out and buy cats and dogs? You mean not everyone just has them show up on their doorstep and decide to keep you?"

(I am such a sucker)

It's funny you say that because I still can't believe people are willing to pay me what they do for one of my puppies!
My husband says,"they got more money then brains"!
That's fine. It puts food on my table.
