Why is it easier to buy a dog then save one?

I have certainly heard horror stories of shelters & rescue groups that make it almost impossible for ordinary people to adopt their critters, but our local APS is pretty good. We got a dog from them a couple of years ago that we took home the same day for an adoption fee of somewhere between $100-150. That included shots and spay/neuter. He was a sweet dog but six months later he was occasionally attacking our little dachsund over food--unprovoked. We were able to take him back to APS with new info on him (like--he needed to be the only dog in the household) and they eventually found him another home. I'd adopt from them again & have sent other people there.

I agree Ninny
adopting to unobtainable requirements is crazy. MUST have a fence, one poster even said the owner couldn't have a job....the dog would be home alone. What is up with that?

nuts to me......but it is just a dog. to put such high standard requirements that prevent a mutt from getting a great home is abuse to me from the shelters. Passing by great homes for substandard reasoning.

oh well...Nothing suffers but the dog in the end, the one they were trying to protect at all costs.

BUT there are great ways to get free lovable good dogs. The classifieds have alot of owners who must move and such and can't take their pets.....looking for homes just like yours.

In my area, say the words, I need a dog and 50 people come out of the woodwork with puppies for free..HA HA HA

The system is broken there is no doubt in that. Save an unwanted out of the paper, it is easier and you will be taking in a dog that otherwise would end up on the street or in one of the shelters that make it nearly impossibly for loving families to adopt a dog and put them down instead.

Its not the money. Id just assume pay a shelter for a dog than I would go out and buy one. Its the outrageous, musts they require you to have and or do.

we adopted a border collie. we loved the dog at first sight and until it died several years later..
but what we went through to adopt him made it certain that we will never put ourselves through that again.. and it was not cheap,

I could have bought a purebred with papers for about $25.oo more from a breeder..

I understand all about them wanting to send the dog to a good home.. In my heart I know I will take good care of all my animals and no sreening from them can ensure that with anybody.. If they were so concerned about the dog, why didn't they do a follow up visit to see how he was doing?? because they had their $$$$$ and that is all they were concerned about..

My experience with the specific breed rescue groups in my area has been that they are run by women who have never had a boyfriend/husband or children and are miserable in their spinsterhood. The only thing they have in their lives are the dogs and to allow one to be GASP!!! ADOPTED out, would mean that they would have to face their "abandonment issues" all over again. So they make stupid rules so that they can feel needed and self-righteous.

to get my dog i just had to fill a form
pay the fee
and agree to get the town medal and the last shoot he needed within 30 day
i found the whole thing pretty easy took a few minute
the long part was to look at the dogs and choose one lol
ive been told usa shelter were pretty hard but that sound crazy

Here is a good one we have a local no kill shelter that states in their contract that if you adopt a hunting breed you may NOT hunt it. They consider using dogs for hunting inhumane, and if caught doing so they can come back and seize the animal and any other animals you have at the residence during the adopted animal's life time.
