Why is it so relaxing to sit with chickens?

This is our first set of chickens. We have 6. I find myself headed out the back door, with some of last night's leftovers in a bowl, when I get home from work, to go visit our Girls. I teach middle schoolers, so I am a little frazzled and burnt out when I get home. But then my little chickens come running up to me! They get their treats, then go about doing their chicken business as I just sit and watch and do nothing. And then I feel better, and ready to continue my day. Is this some kind of chicken therapy that I never knew about?

It's a well-known fact: Chickens are the most relaxing thing since before the big bang.

It is hard to take yourself so serious when watching the chickens. The stress of the day/week just falls away. Even more when one sees your lap as nice place to take a nap. Then, without moving anything but the neck/head, just pecks around at the spots on your shirt or buttons.

I used to like to sit outside and eat lunch, but that is no longer possible. I wanted my birds tame and they are too tame. They won't share a single bite. Then greedy bunch of ungrateful fluff butts. Then they have to wipe their mouths/beaks on me. Kind of hard to stay serious, stressed, or depressed when being used as a napkin.

I so agree too. Last week I found myself out in the hen house, just sitting on a box and taking in the contented sounds of the chickens bedding down. A storm was coming through (we got a nasty flood as well) and the birds were quite, pensive and looking about. As the rain started pouring on the roof of the building, they became quiter and watchful. I sat there with the chooks as the storm passed, then turned off the light and went inside. It is a lot like therapy, just studying them for me. I like how each one is different, some quiet, some rather in your space. How, if you sit among them real quiet, even those who prefer not to be petted will come check you out. Everyone should have a warm, dry and cozy henhouse to sit in.

I use to feel that way about my St Bernard when I came home. It didn't matter how horrible of a day I'd had that big slobbery face was always so happy to see me it made everything better instantly.

Now I have chickens too that makes everything even better! I even changed where I park my car when I get home to the far side of the yard closest to my chicken pen. Everytime I come home from somewhere, even if I was only gone for 5 min, I get out of the car and go over to the pen to watch my girls. I visit them first thing in the morning and several times throughout the day.

I don't know what it is, I know they keep doing the same stuff and don't really change their routine much but I can just stand there and watch them for hours just pecking around, rolling in the dust, making their happy little chicken noises. They are just so amazing!

Random afterthough: Ive thought about putting various baby toys in there just to see how they would react to them.
