Why is my chicken doing this?

I have a silkie bantam mix and she is laying twice a day every day, and not like one "good egg" and then a soft shelled egg, like 2 good eggs decent sized. She also doesn't leave her coop much and is broody ALL the time, what might be wrong?

Her body appears to be handling the two eggs a day excess. For how long is the question. Two eggs a day saps her body of calcium in order to build twice as many shells, and it begs the question, how long before she suffers a calcium deficiency?

Yes, eventually this could translate into poor shell quality, but calcium is also needed for organ functions, the most important being keeping her heart beating.

As for her being broody all the time, this is a misnomer. She isn't broody if she continues to lay eggs. She may appear broody because she needs to use the nest to lay continuous eggs and it just seems as if she's in it all the time.

If this were my hen, I would start her on a daily calcium therapy to try to reset her ovulation cycle. Since she isn't experiencing a calcium deficiency at this time, I would give her half the regular 600mg dose and increase it to the full dose if the half dose doesn't correct the two-eggs a day binging.

This is the type of calcium I recommend. One-half tablet each day given directly into her beak.

Is she in a cage by herself?
