WHY is my chicken so LOUD!!?

I think some are just loud or talkers, like people.

Most of my chickens are very quiet - in fact the other evening when I came home from an overnight trip, I had to look in the gate to make sure they hadn't been eaten, not even the ducks were making noise. But my BCM is a talker, or maybe a singer. She does the egg song a lot and when she gets on a roll, forget about trying to keep her quiet. Of course, she's also one of the loudest girls. Sometimes I think she just likes to hear her own voice.

My barred rock did this a lot before she started laying. Now she just does it to talk to us, if she is unhappy, or if she is excited about something. She does it mostly IN the coop. I love her squawking though. I think it's cute

Great info, I recently bought a 9 month old hen and she is loud and proud. I'm thinking it might have something to do with the fact the farmer plucked her before she went into the nesting box, she has since refused to lay ne any eggs.

I have four 19 week old pullets and out of the blue they became untalented song birds. My aunt who had kept chickens for years said this is completely normal right before they start to lay. They are all acting so strange and territorial I hope it doesn't last!

Your Aunt is correct!

New layers can be quite goofy acting, they don't know what they are doing at first and can be confused and anxious, it can take up to a month or so before they get it all figured out.
They can scratch up and/or out the nest bedding, in and out of coop and nests, loud and mouthy, etc, etc.
Meanwhile, eggs everywhere, some of them can be rather funky looking, soft or thin shelled, huge double yolked eggs.

All 7 of my girls have gone nuts! 29 weeks and only 2 just started laying, but everyone is ready. If I look at them too fast, they all hit the ground in a squat. They holler and a few started pecking at my clothes. Weirdos!
