Why is my dog so nasty?

How right you are. Many a professional use tricks that most people don't know or want to know. Things like the capful of bleach in the shampoo. And they are not harmful to the animal.

One of my dogs always smells kinda funky. I just deal with it.

I can't imagine putting bleach on your pet. Just because it is some "professional secret" etc... doesn't make it right or responsible. Bleach is a caustic solution and is listed in the top ten things that are poisonous to dogs.

Male dogs are smelly beasts that are happy to roll in whatever repulsive thing they come across, including urine, decayed flesh, etc.
I'd make sure he always has a "puppy cut", which is so much easier to keep clean.
If you really think he has some sheepdog in him, you may want to reconsider your idea of leashing him all day and confining him all night. Sheepdogs are bred to work ALL DAY LONG, and some stay working out all night as well. Too much confinement will turn them into frantic, barking lunatic banshees. You'll need to do some intensive training to teach him what his job is, and how to stick around at home if he doesn't already do that...

She doesn't state that she will leave it tied up forever! Infact is hoping to make him a guard dog.

I know plenty of people who keep their dogs outside (including me). Just because they are outdoor dogs doesn't mean they are neglected or abused or abandoned!

I do agree trying to change dog foods and seeing if that helps is a good idea. Price of the food doesn't mean anything, however. Read the label and see what you are getting instead of going by price.

Something like sebaceous adenitis, which is common in sheepdogs, can cause the dog to smell rancid. Since you are using extremely drying shampoo on him, it could really aggravate the condition.

Poor dog!

Some dogs are naturally more odorous than others and have that musky scent to them. I bet the picky glands are the issue, but a good grooming appointment can only help right!

Two capfuls of bleach is not even close to the amount of chemical exposed to skin when you swim in a pool, it is nothing more than a weak antibacterial, so you're not doing anything wrong. I put a few capfuls in the pool my dogs use for drinking water every once in awhile to keep the algae growth down, no big deal.

A 1:100,000,000 bleach mixture bath won't hurt anyone

, come on people, she's not putting him in Clorox bath, she adding a few capfuls to a TUB of water.

And I don't think the OP asked about her dog parenting skills, though she got a pretty judgemental response, she just wants some help with his smell.

She is actually using a capful in a bottle of shampoo, not a tub of water. In either case household bleach is not the same chemical as the chlorine in your pool.

Our pets rely on us to keep them safe. Bathing them in even the smallest amount of a caustic chemical to make their coat whiter or smell better is selfish and irresponsible.

She may not have asked for a judgemental repsonse, but someone needs to speak up for the poor dog.

Pet owners should think about ALL the chemicals we use daily. Even if you are not putting bleach directly on your pet, but you use it to clean the floors the pets sleep on, play on and lick they are ingesting them daily. Even in the air they breathe, which is at a more concetrated dose than us big people get about 5' off the floor or more. Not just bleach, all the fancy cleaning products with shiny labels and the repuations to kill and disinfect.

The forum is an avenue to ask for advice and share with others. It is also our responsibility to educate others whenever the need arises. I don't think from the repsonses the OP gave when presented with the criticisim on using bleach, that she is a thin skinned member. If she never uses bleach to enhance her dogs color then great. But if she continues to do so, that is her decision to make.

I wish her dog well.
