They make an alarm call that sounds very similar to the egg song.
I figured that out when mine would do it when they saw a cat hanging around outside our chain link fence.
They do it to let the flock know there’s a predator about and also to let the predator know they’ve been spotted and they might as well give up their stalking.
Sometimes if there’s several chickens together they’ll even follow the cat from a distance lol.
