So many of you know i have been asking about info on coops lately and was going to try to build one. So i decided to phone the town to see if chickens were legal to own in my area Bad Idea! i asked and she asked what area i am in and i told her what street i live on and she abruptly answered no! so i *sob *sob said oh and hung up the phone. I live in town but not in a subdivision (about 1 acre lot) and am fustrated about what to do. I also think by how quick the response was that it might be biased (maybe she had chickens before and didn't feed them so the chickens bit her). Has anyone run into this situation before? if so what was the result. Also is there some specific person i should talk to about this?

Help me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I would do alittle more checking into things. Dont go on the comment of one person, like you said, it may be her own opinion. Being that you have an acre lot I dont see why you couldnt, but Im cluelsess half the time anyway hehe.

Unfortunatly thats all the help I can offer. I wouldnt know where look or who to talk to. Lots of people here have run into this problem, hopefully they will chime in and give you more details.

On another note, you could always just get a couple hens and some chicken diapers and have them as indoor pets. <grin>

Good luck,
Shannon

I agree with farmgirl, I think I would do a little more research. Not everyone who answers the phone knows what they are talking about.

There must be written ordinances for your town. Good luck, keep us posted.

I have chickens illegally and I live in a subdivision on about a 2/3 acre lot. Fortunately, my neighbors don't mind my having chickens. I even have a roo!!! If it turns out you aren't supposed to have chickens, like me, you have 3 choices. 1) Don't get any (bad idea!) 2) Tell your closest neighbors what you want to do and ask if it's okay with them. Better not push it and get a roo. In this case, you risk the chance of them saying no, it's not okay. 3) Build a coop and get a few hens or pullet chicks and just lay low. Is there a place you can put the coop that wouldn't call attention to itself? There are lots of people on BYC who have illegal chickens and get away with it. Only way you're going to get caught is if someone reports you and, if you're on good terms with your neighbors and bribe them with fresh eggs, you're probably good to go! JMHO

Thanks so far for your support i will be going to the civic center (town hall) and getting a detailed list of by laws.

Sadly to say my town is not that technologically advanced and all i could find was a summary of bylaws which is:
http://www.town.georgina.on.ca/pn-bylaws.aspx
there is nothing that addresses chickens unless they are considered "exotic pets".

Birdlover-
I have a lot that is 50ft wide and backs onto a river so i only have 2 neighbors 1 of my neighbors wouldn't care (as they have 2 dogs that barkmadly into the night on occasion. and it is out of sight from the other neighbor:D so if it is true i cannot have chickens i will just bribe my neighbors with eggs and go without them myself for a few weeks (but it will be worth it). Once i read into the bylaws i will know more about my action plan. My hens are going to be spoiled as they will have a waterfront run:D

I hope i can have chickens legally

So are chickens exotic pets?

Thank-you all for your responses so far

Since she asked what street you live on, I bet she is one of your neighbors and doesn't want "those stinkin' chikens in my neighborhood."
