This is a great thread and oh so true!!

And then of course I can't go to the store without buying them something (or at least looking since their garbage can is already full of the stuff I've bought & stored!!)

Hi

I know they are more expensive than I expected.
I know they will be more expensive as time goes on.
I know they take more time than I expected.
I know they worry me sick when something goes wrong.

BUT

Who would have thought how much FUN they would be?

After adding up the cost of the Coop, feed,my Girls and a Roo, and dividing by the eggs harvested so far. The cost of an egg here is $47.50

Translated- that's like 1.4 million in chicken bucks...

$3.50 for a tube of crickets, that lasts only 30 seconds. Priceless.....

I spent a fair amount on building supplies, but if I go by the $5 a doz. for free range organic eggs at the health food store, instead of the $2 a dozen for supermarket eggs, I figured 36 months was my break-even point.

If I leave quailty out of the equation and go by supermarket prices, I'm still in the red for quite a few more years ... and possibly indefinately. It's hard to beat the commercial egg industry on efficiency if you don't care about how your eggs are produced or what you're eating.

Amazingly, my kids were never big on eating eggs for breakfast until we started raising our own. They claim ours taste better, and if they ever have to eat pale bland eggs anywhere else, they complain. Having them involved in raising and caring for birds, and knowing and caring where their food comes from has made it worth it.

During the entire process of building our coop and run, my husband kept mentioning the cost and I kept saying "It's not about the money." When we got our first egg, he estimated that it was about a $1200.00 egg. With each egg that we collect the price goes down. I'll repeat to all of you---It's not about the money! It's about enjoying what you do and finding new things in life to get eggcited about.

Hi Chickenranch...what do you mean I'm spending too much on artifical protection? Please enlighten me.

Everything tastes better when you have a hand in raising it.

We have more money wrapped up in chickens that I would rather not tell DH about. He mubbles everytime he lets the girls out to free range I can hear him say look at all the money waddle away. He hates to see me go to the feed store and I have been grounded from Lowes.
