Why/not a rooster?

IT'S BEEN MY LIMITED EXPERIENCE, that a flock is happier with a roo around, makes tending and watching the flock WAY more fun.....as far as children go, i have a 7 yr. old daughter and a 3 yr old son... they were 5 n 1 when we started with chickens... we raised our roos from chicks and my daughter goes out there and plays (chases, catches, holds, feeds etc) we have never had a bit of trouble with a roo... in fact when they see the kids coming they usually look for escape routes.... but once caught they just sit calmly.. i guess because they were raised that way... i was nervous at first because of some of the bad rooster stories i've read..... if a rooster ever did anything mean to anyone in the family he would instantly be dinner.... raise em from chicks and let the kids maul them constantly.....

I had heard that as well. Well that and I'd heard that a rooster would 'manage' his flock; keep the ladies together, protect or sound the alarm to predators. And of course a self sustaining flock. Those were the main attractions of a rooster to me. Okay, I won't throw the rooster idea out the window yet. Darin, I really appreciate your post. Do you mind a pm about maintaining a flock with young children? My gals will be 4.5 and 1.
