I used to work with someone like that. Listening to her was exhausting. It's simple math, really.
Why not give others a chance

Sorry but I have to tell this story. I don't gamble, (almost) ever. We were in Vegas a couple years ago for a friends wedding. After about 6 drinks I got $10 dollars in chips and sat down at the roullette wheel. I put all $10 worth on red 27. My sister-in-law told me 'you can spread those around, you'll have a better chance'. She proceeded to pick them up just as the dealer says 'all bets off' and spins the wheel. What does it land on? You guessed it. I gave her the chips and said "no wonder my brother thinks you're bad luck"

So if Johnny Moneybags, a multimillionaire played the lottery and won, you would be just as happy for him as you would for Poor Joe Shmoe if he won???
If Sally Horder has 60 hatching eggs in the incubator and 30 already hatched chicks of popular breed X, and wins an auction for 20 hatching eggs of popular breed X, you would still be happy for her if you knew that your best friend only had 2 of popular breed X and was really hoping to win the auction?
I guess there are 2 parts to my original post:
- Are you honestly and truly happy for other people when they are "blessed"? You never get that "It should have been me"? I'm not really talking about a sport, where the outcome depends on your ability. I'm talking more about games of chance and luck.
- Would YOU personally consider not participating in a game of chance and luck if you knew there was someone who wanted something really bad and you already had plenty of it???
Please don't judge me - these were purely hypothetical questions. I didn't mean to kick the bee's nest!!! I've just observed some things recently and wondered if others would have responded in the same way. I personally don't play the lottery or the like, and have nothing against anyone who does. It's just not for me.

Nope. I'm happy for them. They earned whatever they received.
It's no different than showing a bird.
A breeder, who has been breeding 50+ years should not step down because a person who has just purchased some birds and had them for 4 years wants to win. That's not fair to the established breeder and is not fair to the person who just received the birds.
Why? Because the newcomer did not EARN it. They did not truly beat their competition, their competition bowed out. How is the breeder helping the up-and-comer in stepping down?
Maybe, in your instance of the hatching eggs, the "best friend" can gift some eggs or the "best friend" can sell the other person eggs? Either way, the person paid the money and deserved to win. Including the millionaire.

I always entertain the thought that it would have been nice if someone who needed it more had won the money...that's natural. Not necessarily me, but just someone in need. I think everyone thinks thoughts of "what would I do with that kind of money?" but I don't begrudge those who win. Money has never, ever bought anyone happiness and I'm happy~that can't be bought.

I don't know anything about kids sports. I was mainly talking about my experience in bike racing, when referring to the sandbagging. Someone I know dominated the field last year. Instead of bumping to an appropriate class, she is dominating again. Totally uncool behavior on her part.

Not me! I think the millionaires can buy more tickets to increase their chances and it burns me up to hear of them winning! especially as you never hear of them giving a penny of it away!

She gets crap all the time that she shouldn't be running JV, she's too good to run JV. Argh, the kid is 14 and has to run JV to do anything else. It's not her fault that the rest of the fresh and JV field is at best ok. She did a light run (according to her) and still came in 1st in JV.
