why off the ground???

Prevent having a place for mice to burrow underneath to live and pester you and your hens. No place for snakes to live.

If the floor is about 24 inches off the ground, you don't need to bend over to clean the floor or otherwise reach into the coop. The space under the coop is useful as run space, stays dry, and provides shelter during the day.

My coops are raised 2 - 3 feet off the ground for the following reasons:

1. Provides extra space for my animals to walk under to get out of the rain and heat.
2. Provides shade for them to go under during those hot Louisiana days.
3. Allows me to place my long chicken yard feeders under when it rains.
4. No varmints (mice, etc) can hide and live.
5. Provides protection in the event a hawk or any other air predator tries to land down and swoop up one of my birds. They can run under there for safety.
