Why on Earth is it called "Andalusian Blue"?!

Depends on what kind of blue you want to make.......

"Andalusian" blue is the result of a gene noted as Bl.

0 copies of Bl = black
1 copy of Bl = blue
2 copies of Bl = splash

So, if you have a *genetically* black bird (a bird with the gene E) rather than a bird that is hiding some sort of pattern gene under a lot of melanin (pretty common in some breeds), then mating the black bird with a splash bird will give you all blue offspring. But if the bird is actually hiding a pattern under melanin (for example, a heavily melanized black copper Marans crossed with a splash Marans), then you could get a mix of colors in the babies.

But surely, when referring to horses, 'grey' doesn't necessarily mean grey in colour it means grey skin. An apparently white coloured horse can also be a 'grey'.

Palomino horses are also supposed to have a gray skin color.

I dunno nuthin about gray skin in horses...but an apparently white horse can be "gray" because gray horses often *turn* white with age.

My current theory -- which may or may not be backed up by facts -- is that it's called "Andalusian" blue from the horse, and that the lacing is preferred because it mimics the dappling often found on gray horses. It's a nice theory, anyway!

thank you very much have some jersey giants coming along and some giant cochins really like the blue color looks like i will need some splash JG hens have the colors for the cochins thanks again sorry for disrupting your thread.

Feel free to ask more questions, it's all about learning.

I love all types of blue color, whether they are "correct" or not, just confused as to the whole Andalusian blue thing. Someone should have written it down when they decided to do it!

black * splash
black * blue
blue * blue
blue * splash

andalusian blue means the same blue as found in the andalusian breed.
Not: smoky, lavender, opal, dun, sexlinked albinism and future blue mutations.

How would you call andalusian blue without lacing/edging?
Self blue could also mean lavender.
The japanese call chocolate: blue.

So with andalusian blue we know what you mean.

I don't mind that andalusian be left out but self blue should not be used for lavender then.

Yes, self-blue to me is Lavender. Blue coloration without lacing/edging to me would be called "poorly marked blue", otherwise without looking closely at the feathers, wouldn't it be very similar to seeing a lavender bird?

Japanese have several words that are opposite to me, I won't pretend to know the language at all. Give me Spanish any day.

Until I was on this site, I had no idea self-blue was the same as Lavender. I had just assumed that self-blue meant the blue would breed true for itself. Maybe "blue" could be called "true-blue"?
