Why pigeons?

just be cautioned they are as additive as chickens! lol don t forget their importance in history either. they were decorated war heros!

I saw that! There was a pigeon who still delivered her message with only one leg, one eye, and shot in the chest! That's a dedicated bird!

I would say the ones I'm babysitting don't "do" anything as in have a purpose or give me anything but then really neither do fish, budgies or even cats or dogs. They are just relaxing to watch :)

Don't tell me that, they need a purpose. We have enough lazy pets who don't pull their weight around here. ;)

Of course they will not give you meaty babies while not breeding them, these are babysitted, so yeah... But once your pairs start breeding(which they readily do) they will not stop(like ever!).. And of course the poor pigeons will not just pop out eggs like chickens do while babysitted... They just lay a clutch of tow, babies hatch around 18-20 days later, lay another clutch when the babies are about 2-3 weeks and the babies fledge at around 4-5 weeks.... That's of course when they are settled and paired... And all breeds of pigeons do the same cycle, however the meatier, bigger breeds produce plumper meatier gourmet type squabs! However any normal size breed can also give goog squabs. My grandma(RIP) was once given a couple of pigeons as a gift, she put them in a big outdoor aviary and let them out to freely do whatever they want after a couple of weeks... They quickly started breeding, they collected nesting material, built a nest, laid eggs and started from there.... In a few months the aviary was full of pigeons! So of course my old rustic grandma decided they should make themselves useful(she didn't have space for more anyways) so she ate a lot of them... And she left about tow or three pairs to breed, and they supplied her with amazing squabs all year round! The whole thing was amazing for us until we asked her were the birds disappearing, she refused to tell us back then (we were little kids) but eventually we found out she was eating them! We felt sad at first but quickly understood they're a good source of food like chickens.... Even better!!
Simce then i was hooked with everything pigeons!!! Oh and the first pair she had were mixed breed pigeons(nothing special but we're beautiful) and lived so long and kept producing until she couldn't keep them anymore!
