Why should you have the coop door open in?

We have a local company that specializes in sheds and gazebos. I copied their design for framing and doors, etc. I never thought to do anything different than have the door open out. With a 6' X 8' coop, floor space for the door swing would be at a premium.

My coop door opens in b/c all the literature I had found about building coops said for it to open inward. Oh course this was before I had found BYC. Anyway~ I HATE IT!!!!!!

It shoves all the shavings in ward. Maybe I'll put a screen door on this summer to help w/ ventilation like Poison Ivy. I could have used one last summer.

We did the same thing you are doing. We have a very large shed and converted about 1/3 of it into our chicken house. My husband built the wall and the door. Our door opens out. I don't know why we did it this way, but it works well and we like it. I guess it just seemed the most natural way to build it. I will try to post a picture of it tomorrow.

We read that the door should open in too, but didn't think it was a good idea, because of the bedding and floor space,so we made ours open out.

Mine has 2 doors. An outside door that opens out and a "screen" door that opens in. There is a board across the bottom of the entry to keep the shavings in and the inside door sits higher.
I like this because I can leave the outside door open for more fresh air and I can see who's on the other side of the screen door so nobody accidently gets out.
My inside door is home made and has poultry netting on it.

Mine opens out, since it is easier for me to close at night to keep all the critters out that might want to visit.Come summer DH Will take down the wooden door and replace it with a screen door to help keep the coop cooler, we have windows on 3 sides, but it getS HOT here in the summer.

We plan to have ours open out to a roofed run. We weatherproofed the door with primer and exterior latex for that reason- easier for cleanup and if you ever have a large predator (we have bears) it's harder for them to pry than to push. We'll latch from the inside too- strong bolt.

We'll be adding a screen door too, and it will open in.

Here are the pictures of my coop from the inside of our shed. Notice the moment I open it, the chickens are there to greet me. In the first picture you can see the new wall that is build to the ceiling. Hope this helps!

The only thing we forgot was more storage. We are currently working on that now. There just doesn't seem to be enough places for all the other "things" for the chickens.
