Why soy free?? (And the effects of soy)

Where does the fish meal come from ? farmed fish? I would be curious.

Some people have partially switched over to wild bird seed. Most of those grains are not GM or sprayed with soy oil.

I have a very strong dislike for how much Soy is pumped into our food chain.

Thanks to Oprah for making it a popular choice for Menopausal women.

I wonder if she thinks it is just a coincidence since she started taking Soy for her Menopausal symptoms she became Hypothyroid?

a much better source of bio-diesel is switchgrass. you grow it among your other crops as a row cover to keep out weeds, it needs absolutely no tending, needs no chemicals, and is highly productive in making ethanol. best part: we aren't burning food for fuel. if growing GMO, conventionally farmed corn and soy were about feeding the world we wouldn't have so much food laying around that we think it's a good idea to burn it....

many of us refuse to be part of those chemical/industrial complexes. i live on well water and rain water collection tanks, my toothpaste is made from all natural ingredients, i don't buy synthetic fiber clothing (except that made from recycled goods), and i gave up coffee. i'm actually meeting more and more people around my area who are interested in local, sustainable agriculture and we are REBUILDING our farm community through our partnerships. even if someone isn't willing to make this kind of life change (even though it's insanely rewarding) that doesn't mean that they should EVER have to accept eating something that is so harmful.

how many of you use artificial sweetners? like soy these are poping up in many food products and are far worse. sweet n low is highly unsafe for pregnant women, but people push how bad sugar is and every one jumps on the latest artificial sugar. splenda is a crock of crap my friend who has been a chemist for over 30 years would not touch that stuff with a ten foot poll . it sickens me watching people suck down bottle after botle of diet soda when i know whats in it . aspertame is a leading cause of migraines , many people i know who suffer from migraines that i have told to stop consuming products containg aspertame have had there migraines stop compleatly!

I agree. Diet soda is a bottle of chemicals. I don't drink it anymore, although I occasionally treat myself to an all-natural soda. I really like stevia extract for my tea and we use organic toothpaste.
Anybody here raise meat chickens? I'd like a recipe for a non-soy meat bird chow that I could have milled or make myself. I'm planning on getting 25 broilers in the fall but I do need to try to keep the costs down. I want to try to avoid cargill and Purina feeds, if possible.

Most thyroid medications are now synthetic. I would stay away from Armour thyroid. The levels are very unstable and it's a difficult medication to use. It's generally not considered the best choice. Synthetic thyroid really has far less autoimmune and allergic problems.

Here is a wright up on Fish Meal http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/ps007

Note
that fish meal will give your eggs a fish smell if you use to much.
If I remember right I think you can use up to 10% of feed ration. A better substitute would be Porcine Meat Meal.
Also if you remove all the soybean in your feed you are going to have to find a way to substitute the amount of Energy, Amino Acids, Vitamins, Minerals, and so on that Soybean has.

Well, it's a Catch 22. Monsanto reels them in. The GMO goes 'Viral", infecting even the crops of farmers who didn't sign on for the ride. Farmers can't save their own seed so they've sold their soul to the devil. Monsanto owns the patents, sues any farmer, including the farmer's who didn't sign up, because now their crop's contain GMO genes from pollen drift, and now the farmer's are beholden to Monsanto foe life. A monopoly is created and farmer's are stuck buying seed and Round-up from a single company that can set prices and control the market at will.

Oh there are so many pieces of misinformation in these few sentences.

I am a FARMER and am in NO WAY beholden to Monsanto!

There is no statement on the label of our feed that indicates where it is from. Wiki has some info on it and says it is mostly from wild caught fish, and it is the offal and bones from the fish processing that are cooked and ground into meal. Not sure if this qualifies as organic. Still, I feel safer with the fish meal than sprayed soy.

Curious to know, what you use to make your feed and what you use to control weeds in your Hay?

Kinda cool when an old thread stirs the pot again, isn't it?

Thats good to know it is from wild fish.
A local popular composted fish product for gardening turned out to contain fish from fish farms. Most Farmed fish are fed antibiotics everyday in their feed. That product is not so popular now with many "organic" gardeners.
I agree, for protien in chicken food, almost everything is better than RR Soy, even road kill.
