"Why we have Chickens" Poll comment

My price per bird was approximately $5.30 per bird, they dressed out at 6 lbs. average, so I had about a buck a pound. I was pretty happy with that.

I agree, they all seem to be "bird brains"!

In today's paper ... there are adds for the local super markets, for 4-5 pound Corish X at $ 0.69 a pound. so... $2.76 - $3.45 per bird. HHHMMmmmmm !!!

Yea, it sucks for the small producer but good for the consumer. That is because they are vertically integrated. They own the feed mills, hatcheries, farms and processing plants. Maple Leaf Farms for example produces 16 million ducks per year. They have 140 farms under them.

Quanity is how they make money. I could never compete with that... no body here can. Honestly I think when they are selling them that cheap they are making pennies to the dollar. I don't understand why a company would do that but I'm all about a little better quality. If I made 10 cents per bird that would be the end of my chicken days!

Additionally, the grocery store chicken is almost all "enhanced" -- meaning that they're selling saltwater for the price of meat and shaving a little extra profit out that way.

I have always wanted laying hens, but I've started seriously considering meat birds in order to get meat that is MEAT rather than protein mush adulterated with salt water.

I HATE paying meat prices for salt water.

I HATE the fact that once the meat has been "enhanced" it seems that all the points that you can flavor with your own marinades, rubs, and seasonings are bound up so that whatever you do with it the chicken tastes exactly the same -- bland and salty.

DH is sensitive to something they often use in the "broth" that they "enhance" the meat with and I HATE seeing him unwell because I missed the fine print on the packaging.

I keep ducks as pets, but I would like to be able to process one or more to eat if I was going to put one down due to injury anyway. I lurk in this part of the forums, have read the stickies, and have even gone to youtube to watch videos. I don't know if I could do it, and that sort of disgusts me. I want to be able to darnit! I know where meat comes from, I am a meat eater, but the thought of actually doing the deed gives me the willies

I would hope that would be true for everyone here. For me, sticking the bird is a mechanical process that I try not to think too much about. The rest is easier.

There is no price tag for knowing what you are putting in your mouth. Do they really list all of the things they have fed those chickens in the store on the label? I use non-medicated feed, they are kicked out as soon as they have feathers and we do all the processing. We butchered at 9 & 10 weeks price per bird was $4.50 if you included the cost of the vacuum seal bag.
