You kind of walked into this one... it is funny because you refer to the broilers as dumb.... I think you said "to dumb to realise their fat and dying".... seriously? If your going to call something dumb... try to look smart while doing it... you probably should have said... too dumb to realize they're fat and dying

You know what upsets me the most.... even though you may not like something... show a little respect. You don't see me saying negative things about dual purpose breeds.... because I could be like... who would ever want to raise those scrawny, no good, sorry excuse for a chicken... However I understand both breeds pros and cons and respect them both. For instance no broiler would ever taste as good as a dual purpose chicken when it comes to a good chicken noodle soup. That's just one of many ways to cook a dual purpose. Both breeds have their moments when they shine.

Here are some pics of the "lazy boring stupid pigs"... You know, some of you guys are right... they look repulsive, fat, ugly, nasty, too fat to walk, sloppy, stinky.... oh ya... stupid... I almost forgot stupid (like I can't remember the last time I seen a smart one). But you know what.... they sure do taste really freakin good!!

If you're just using them for stock, just leave the skin on. Just clean them good and toss them in the pot!

yeah, Im not willing to do the butchering myself and to pay someone to do it for me would make it not worth the money. My chickens are pets only to the point of living out their lives here even after they are done laying. I would like to raise some meat birds if I had someone willing to do the deed for me. My son wanted to get turkeys to raise for meat but he moved out for a while. I guess my uncle could teach him, I may have to think about it again.

The funny part isnt that I typoed when saying they were fat and dying.. the funny part is, I'm doing an English Major at Uni

Wow, I didn't think I posted anything controversial- a little sensetive are we? It's skewed because the original poster referenced the fact that on percent of AMERICANS keep chickens for meat, not speaking only about the BYC community. My point is that BYC doesn't necessarily represent ALL chicken owners on this subject when a MAJORITY of BYC'ers are keeping their birds as pets. And do we really need to be that PC? Do a poll on any street in America (not on BYC,) about a person who gives chickens the run of their house wearing diapers, and I'll bet the word "nuts" comes up a couple of times. Just like if I ran around in my yard naked, rubbing myself in poo, I would expect people NOT to just dismiss it as me expressing my individuality and freedom of choice.

Jaku ~ my apologies for being sensitive. I actually didn't realize I was posting in the meat bird forum area, I was perusing recent posts and came across this one. I probably actually am sensitive, too, cuz all my birds have names and personalities (but I seriously am not a chicken diaper-er......my daughter on the other hand, haha well, those birds are our pets). So please excuse me if I was sounding snappy, I wouldn't have normally posted on a meat bird forum anyway

I've raised birds for meat before and after a couple of year's break, did so again this year. Pros, it really is the best chicken meat one can get. Nothing in the store compares. Cons, it is considerably more expensive, per pound, than the store bought on sale. I raise birds to increase self sufficiency AND save money. A cost analysis indicates I gain a little bit on eggs. Meat I loose on. Meat birds can be a bit contrary to some principles of self sufficiency. For the heavier meat birds (cornish x), we are reliant on a hatchery to get them. Other birds don't return as good of a feed to meat ratio. I probably won't raise meat birds again next year unless I can get the feed costs down.

Dumb chickens? Frankly, I think all chickens are pretty much stupid. They all have their merits, but intelligence is not one of them.
