Thanks! They are such cuties. My granddaughters chased them yesterday and never could catch one so my hopes they can outwit the hawks is bolstered. They are one of the most tight-knit gangs here at the prison.

This is such a warm, goodhearted thread that I hate to inject any cold reality. But I feel compelled to do so for the sake of your 'prison gang'.

Chasing chickens is one thing no human should ever do. Its why we have devised tools and methods for rounding them up. Running amok in pursuit of them, usually results in you just looking silly and the chicken winning. Whether they are smug in that victory is undetermined.

However, the hawk has no such concerns - or worries. All things being equal between the hawk and the chicken, safe money is on the hawk.

I suggest you take no chances. Erect plenty of "dive shelters" around the chickens' territory, so they can dive for cover under the hawk's assault. Don't leave them to roam around in the open without these.

Once you've done that, take the cluckers aside and let them know the hawk is around. He 'aint the grandkids... and the slow chicken loses. That should keep the fast ones a little safer, anyways.

It was meant to be lighthearted. Chasing means "trying to pick up." They are teenagers. They sleep, eat and text. They don't run. I have done as much, if not more, than everyone to keep my animals safe. Sorry you took it differently than I intended.
