Why would one of my hens turn mean..... she is not a year old yet and I got them all when they were 2 days old - this fall is when she turned mean. She is always at the door waiting for me - I am not sure why she turned like this or what I can do to stop her?????

Do you have a roo? One of our girls became "hormonally challenged" (we'll say) and started chasing everyone. She had taken on the role of the roo, because we didn't have one. It was just her way of protecting her girls. She even took on our standard poodle one day, and managed to come out alive & well.

It could be other things too, but that was our experience. We got a roo and alls well. But you may not be able to, so if she doesn't come out of it theres always the stew pot?

Or a new home?

Thanks -- I dont' have a roo --- this really bothers me because I am a animal lover -- and even tho it's just a chicken I would really like to just let her out of the coop -- -but it would really bother me if something did happen to her ---- I've even tried showing her who is boss and it still
doesn't help..... She is the only one that has a name and it starts with B.

If you like her just keep working at it. She must think she's a rooster. You could try to separate her from the flock for a few days and then reintroduce her. It should upset the pecking order and make it start all over.

I have no answer for a "why" but a few squirts from a water bottle always makes my hen stop whatever naughty things she's up to. It's gotten to the point that she only has to see the bottle in my hand for her to stop.

It has gotton to the point that I carry a pail in with me to block her and I know she is after me now because she is trying to dodge around the bucket to get me......eeekkkeeekk
