Here is how to put mites and lice in their place. LOL!

Our Barred Rocks had stopped laying. We did everything we could think of to get them back into laying. We gave them higher protein, moved them to another part of the yard, etc. We still got nothing. Finally I asked www.mypetchicken.com what to do for hens that won't lay. I told them everything we tried. They said to check for Mites or Lice. They stress chickens out. This afternoon after we came home, I checked them to see if they had them. Well, you won't believe what I found. Little orange and red critter everywhere. EVEN ON MY SHOWGIRLS, AAAAAHHHHHHH! I dusted them today and we will just have to see in about a week if they are gone. So thanks to My Pet Chicken.com we may be on the fast track to egg production again. YYYYYYYYEEEEEEEYYYYYYY!!!!!!!

Thanks For Reading This,
Cheyenne

I will honestly NEVER dust my chickens again. the first time was traumatic, not to mention me, my dd and the chickens breathing in that horrible poison. Now I just treat with ivermectin. Sure, its still poison, but none of us have to breathe it in, and the ivermectin kills the lice and mites better than dusting, not to mention will worm them if needed too.

Isn't there a withdrawal time where you can't eat the eggs? How long does it last?

My hens aren't producing much right now, but I can't see any mites on them. They are all growing in feathers, however, from the huge roo I had that did them so much damage - I'm attributing the slowdown in laying to that.

The withdrawal time is about two weeks, but in all honesty, we still eat the eggs. I don't sell them, but ..... I read that they actually treat humans with ivermectin in third world countries. But for powder and ivermec, it syas two weeks.

Another great option for getting rid of mites and lice is Carefree Enzymes Poultry Protector.

It works great! And it's non-toxic! No nasty chemicals.

Wonder the same thing. The ivermectin we give our horses is a paste. Does ivermectin make a wormer for chickens and if so, do you put it in their feed or water?

I beg to differ on that stuff! I have used an entire bottle in the past month and guess what they got the mites back!!! Waste of money!

I use adams flea and tick spray with IGR, now if i can just remember to treat them again in 10 days that should get rid of them. They have been particularily bad here this year, lots of mice running around as well as wild birds, chipmunks and rabbits. Seems like as soon as i get rid of them and literally gut their coops, runs, favorite dust bathing areas a few weeks later they are itching again. I have neveer had such a hard time getting rid of these little blood sucking PITAS. I use DE in their coop and in their nests too as a preventative but i am now questioning that too.
Maybe i should be spending big bucks on that ivermectin too
