Why?

Me personally, I don't really want to know, but guess and see if I'm right. It just makes the whole process more fun to me. I don't have pheasants(yet) but that's just how I know I'd be.

Te only reason other than being inpatient is if they need to sell some do to and issue or not wanting them.

Im with Tony. But like NC29mom says BYC is a great site with mostly nice people and a wealth of information from seasoned veterans of the bird world.

Yup, everybody wants to know what sex they are 2 seconds after they hatch. An even bigger mystery to me is why people have to candle their eggs every 10 minutes throughout the whole hatching process. It's also funny that the people that over-candle their eggs usually post later that "my eggs are 3 days overdue and nothing hatched", or "someone sent me infertile eggs". Exactly how many times does a mother hen candle her eggs during incubation? Nuff said.

When I sell them as chicks, they are sold straight run only. There is no way possible to guarentee male and female as chicks.I've been raising pheasants for 29+ years and still can't sex them properly.
No when people want pheasants they want to buy all your hens so you get stuck with all roosters.

Tony I love the title... "why". I say who cares, people are wierd

I think it has to do with dreams of selling said birds for BIG profit.

. I don't sell chicks, and only raise pheasants for MY enjoyment first, and don't care about selling anything for a loooooonnnnnggggg time. Some I won't sell. I suppose that is why I don't care what they turn out to be.

This site can be informative, but be careful of bad info. On gbwf too. In my opinion nothing can beat a good book by real experts such as Delacour, Beebe, and Johnsgard. Then take that information, and form it to your personal requirements. Don't blindly trust what Billy Bob Pheasant Plucker on here states as truth.

(sorry... just got off work, can you tell I am tired and grumpy

) But it's true. I went through so much *explitive deleted* from self acclaimed experts in person and on forums when I first started raising birds. It actually slowed my growth.

Hey...

is it a girl or a boy??? How much money can I get for this
yippiechickie.gif
??? LOL

I want to know because I don't want to find out 4-6 months down the road that I've been feeding a bunch of males who will likely only bring $5 at auction.

ETA: Also, in the case of my lone golden chick, I would like to know the sex of it so I can get a buddy for it to 'grow up' with...preferably of the opposite sex

Believe me,you are not going to make any money selling birds unless you are a big scale breeder. If you keep track of what you spend on feed, treats and cost of pens, time you've put into your birds, you will not be happy. It feels nice when someone buys birds from you and you have a few bucks in your hand. But what are you going to do with the cash?Buy grain, another breed you've been wanting, build another pen.It just keeps going. It's a sickness they we enjoy and can't get enough of.
Each of my pens cost me 300.00 to build and that's my building them,so no labor on that.I build a 12x12 and split it into 2 6x12's,and thats 300.00.I have 15 6x12 pens, plus 3 6x6 off ground pens inside of 3 6x12,and 4 3x6 inside another 4 pens. These pens are not figured into the 300.00.Then you have the price of your birds.Say you lose a bird for some reason(it always happens just before breeding season),now you have to replace the bird you lost.Say it was a pair of blue eareds. The pair was 200.00,now the replacement bird is another 100.00.Now you've got 300.00 invested into this 1 pair of birds. You may chosse to hatch with an incubator. That's a 600.00+ investment. You need electricity to run the bator. It's an endless cycle, and by the time you think you have made some money. You look to see where it is.Guaranteed it's not in your pocket.
We just think we are making money.Well that's what we will tell ours wives.
If you don't raise birds for enjoyment, then you really don't enjoy birds.
