Believe me,you are not going to make any money selling birds unless you are a big scale breeder. If you keep track of what you spend on feed, treats and cost of pens, time you've put into your birds, you will not be happy. It feels nice when someone buys birds from you and you have a few bucks in your hand. But what are you going to do with the cash?Buy grain, another breed you've been wanting, build another pen.It just keeps going. It's a sickness they we enjoy and can't get enough of.
Each of my pens cost me 300.00 to build and that's my building them,so no labor on that.I build a 12x12 and split it into 2 6x12's,and thats 300.00.I have 15 6x12 pens, plus 3 6x6 off ground pens inside of 3 6x12,and 4 3x6 inside another 4 pens. These pens are not figured into the 300.00.Then you have the price of your birds.Say you lose a bird for some reason(it always happens just before breeding season),now you have to replace the bird you lost.Say it was a pair of blue eareds. The pair was 200.00,now the replacement bird is another 100.00.Now you've got 300.00 invested into this 1 pair of birds. You may chosse to hatch with an incubator. That's a 600.00+ investment. You need electricity to run the bator. It's an endless cycle, and by the time you think you have made some money. You look to see where it is.Guaranteed it's not in your pocket.
We just think we are making money.Well that's what we will tell ours wives.
If you don't raise birds for enjoyment, then you really don't enjoy birds.
