wierd bump, protrusion, ingrown feather... actually preening gland

Thank you so much for this post! My husband showed me this thing on one of my ladies this evening and I was so scared - it looked like a large maggot emerging out of her back and it totally freaked me out.

Absolutely makes sense - phew!!!! Thanks very much. I can now sleep tonight!

I'm so glad I found this!! I was looking on here for treatment for an ingrown feather, but now I'm positive it's her preening gland!!
Thanks!

Thank you so much for this! I saw the gland on one of my 10 week old Barred Rocks and started to panic! I assumed it was some awful growth! Phewwww....

Thanks for this post. I just had a serama chick hatch with this weird red growth on its back above the tail and almost had a heart attack. So happy to know it's nothing serious.

*Sigh* Huge relief! This is why I love BYC!!! I opened my coop this morning and noticed this on my top girl, Conkie, and started to worry. I looked at the other girls and found the same thing and after some hunting found this post. Thank you

I was freaking out until I saw this but I'm still a little confused because I think one of my hens has a two right next to each other. I'm going to go check and see if I can grab a picture. I looked up pictures and they all seem to have one little nub but she definitely has two...

I know this is an old post, but I am very grateful for the information on this site. I asked my husband if he could help me lance an ingrown feather tomorrow. His reply, "you looked it up and everything?" expecting that I had... Well thinking I already knew what is was and how to treat it I hadn't done any looking. Glad I did after he asked... Cuz guess what!! It's her preen gland!! There isn't actually a problem! :yesss:
