wierd, strange, unusal and just down right wrong names for Kids.

When I was 16 yrs old, being bored , I was thinking up names for my future children.
I love Lilac flowers - so I tried the name out - Lilac - and tried rhyming it with other word (this is because with my last name back then - Clark - rhymed with park, and my Granddaddy had to go thru his childhood schooling with a silly rhyme - there goes Clark, sitting in a park letting a fart), so I was being cautious, ..... Lilac lie back .... NOOO!! Can you envision young men telling my girl that!!!

Then I do have children and 4 out of 6 have names that sound similar as in the "air" sound - Terence, Aaron, Shanara, Shawn, Eric, Shannon (when they were young I called a first name out 4 would come running, and 3 have that Sh as the beginnings of their names, and to top this off, my Grandgirl's name also starts with Sh for Shanian (Shanara and Brian) !

ETA Shanara was a name I came up with at that time when I was 16.

There was a retired NASCAR driver die earlier this year he was named Richard (and funny he went by his nick name not his proper name) Trickle, if you don't believe me he was in the movie "days of thunder". I had a teacher in high school name Richard Hurt, he never went by his nick name.... My mom had people in her small home town who's first names where Bunny (a man), Cotton, Jewel (a man). She named me after her father and I am an outcast of the family because I refuse to use my first name because it's odd and not spelled the way most would spell it. My mom has 4 brothers 3 at one time before she was married had married women with the same first name. yes they had 4 Mary's with the same last name in the immediate family, one divorced (this sister in law even shared my mom's middle name) and he re-married, he married a woman with the same first name as my mom's twin sister. 2 of my mom's nephews where named the same name as her husband, my father, and they married women with the same name as my mom. Yes if you asked about Ken and Mary you had to state which couple you where talking about. My brother was not going to be left out he married a woman with the same name as our mother so again, my mother has to deal with a relative in the immediate family with the same first and last name, a pharmacy in town can't seem to get it straight two people with an odd last name and a common first name are not the same person...

LOL reading this thread!
I tried so hard to give my girls nice but different names: Lynne then named her daughter Ann -- so people wouldn't always forget the E
Andrea became Dreya in high school and no one remembers her real name, and Marisa ( one s) is now known as Misa instead of the Isa (EEsa) that we nicknamed her so people wouldn't call her Marissa.
And it continues...Two grandsons are Trigger and Gauge. What can i say? You can spell them and pronounce them so what's to complain about.
I work with children's names too. The winner? La-a How do you pronounce that one? You will never guess.

I am always appalled at the names some people give to their children. The one positive thing you can do for your baby is to give it a name that will never humiliate, or lead to teasing/ bullying. It costs no more to give a child a normal suitable and dignified name than it does to make a fool of them by giving them a ludicrous name. Names that you might think are cute for a baby can be ridiculous when applied to a 60 year old. No need to make up names, there are literally millions of names out there. If you must have something unusual choose a name from a different culture to your own. bear in mind that your child may get sick and tired of always having to spell it for people and will certainly not thank you in the years to come.

There was a nice, level-headed podcast on this subject that interviewed two teens with bizarre names.

http://www.nber.org/digest/sep03/w9873.html is more of a concern to me, though the solution in my mind is not just naming everyone "John".

My husband has a very rare/unusual name that is easy to rhyme with many unpleasant things and has always been very popular with no teasing. I have an extremely normal name and was teased mercilessly until I developed much greater confidence in adulthood. :)

My name is Marlon, My little brothers name is Marlin an my Uncles name is Marlin.. Other than how I spell mine, we all have the same name. I was called little Marlon till my little brother was born. Glad to lose that nickname. Family now calls me Mar an my little brother by his middle name, Miles..

Older brother is Named Jerome Pinkmen Weldon. Dads name is Rickey Pinkmen Weldon. His dad was Sam Pinkmen Weldon. An as I understand it, he was named out of respect for his uncle Pinky
