yeah, the lady is taking the duck tonight looking for its mother, and i told her grass would work for bedding. And i think im gonna put a rock in the water dish because i don't want to bring a huge chick waterer, i will DEFINETLY put a mirror and a stuffed animal in there, poor thing.
Thanks again!

Hi, if you have found a wild duck, it should go to a Federally Licensed Wildlife Rehabilitator. It is illegal to keep it.

You can go to www.duckrescue.org and find someone near you. Also, call your local Fish and Wildlife Department and they can help you.

Do not release the duckling to a pond. Other ducks will come along and kill it or it will be eaten or killed by a predator. Ducks won't just take in a stray duckling.

Don't handle it much and keep in in a warm place with a lamp. You can give it a shallow dish of water and some non medicated chick starter until you get it to a rehabber.
Good Samaritan laws give you 24 hours to arrange for a wild animal to be brought to a rehab facility where they will be raised as naturally as possible until time to release it to the wild where it belongs.

Jojo, your copy and pasted info here
https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?pid=2340285#p2340285
pertains to domestic ducks, not wild ones.

Please don't hesitate to do the right thing for this duckling.

I have a duck that was rescued from a parking lot. I had a lot of trouble getting it to eat at first but i put it in with my chicks and they taught it to eat finally. Good luck with it.

UPDATE: Today i gave the teacher the food and some papers on what she should do and not do. She said her kids want it but she doesn't. She also said "I was thinking about putting it in the zoo". I was like r u serious?!!?!! (in my head), why in the world would you do that?!!?! They will have a WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYYYY better life with me than a freakin zoo!!!!! They will be in MY BEDROOM!!!!! i can give it A LOT of attention because it is in my room and its not a TON of baby ducks. But tomorrow i am telling her that we have a pond and the proper facilities to raise it THE RIGHT WAY!!!!

This makes me laugh
Sorry not to be rude, but if ducks could choose I bet they would all choose to live in a zoo instead of in a kids bedroom.

the fact of the matter is that you're not allowed to keep wild migrating fowl (a mallard is a such animal). If you are reported your parents will be facing huge fines do you really want that? Also there is no reason to be rude (saying "duh") you are obviously new to ducks and I am sorry to say that most of the info you were given on here is misinformed. Doing right by this duckling means YOU taking it to a rehabilitator (or a zoo) as they know what they are doing you don't and that's the plain and simple answer here.

If you want to enjoy owning a duck or a few ducks ask around on here and plan before you get them. Theres domestic mallards that are just as pretty as the wild ones (but a bit bigger) make wonderful pets and AREN'T illegal.

Please dont ignore the fact that what youre doing is illegal. It may turn around and bite you in the bud.

they aren't living in my room forever, just while they are supposed to be , duh

When dealing with wildlife or for that matter creatures that have no choices about their lives, you have to consider their best interests, not your wants and desires.

Yes it is great fun to have a duckling in your room.
But the fact of the matter is, what you have is a wild Federally Protected Migratory Bird and as such, it is not fair to the duck (nor legal for you) to keep it. It is selfish.

Sometimes the best things are the hardest and I guarantee you that a Wildlife Rehabber will make sure the duckling has a way better life than what you can give it. Not because you don't care, but becasue it is the way of nature and the way it should be.

I know a few Federally Licensed Wildlife Rehabbers and I will point them to this thread and I hope one will be able to help you with the duckling.

Your screen name says you are a farm animal lover. Prove it. This is not a farm animal you have in your possession.
