BTW, I have been wondering about wild male hog meat. Doesn't it taste manky due to not being castrated?

I will check about snares here. If nothing else I will just borrow a gun from my Grandparents that will do the job. I would go buy one but I have already started the process to buy a Walther 9mm so I don't think Hubs will let me get two. HAHAHA.

I'm definitely game on getting some meat. My Grandpa said he would show me how to dress it since I have never done it before.
Good news is our Pup is doing better. She isn't 'out of the woods' yet but she is trying to stand and walk on her own now. I still have to move her in a baby stroller though...

Please do a Google search for feral.hogs. They can carry diseases transmittable to humans, but the meat is safe when cooked. Boar meat sometimes tastes "gamey"- it's the smell when you cook in the house that will make you gag. In some areas locals will trap hogs for free and sell them. In any case feral hogs are a dangerous nuisance. Be safe and glad to hear your "little puppy" is on the mend.

The "Russian" Wild Boar were originally released into the mountains of Western North Carolina. Since then they have escaped and bred with other feral hogs. Some people buy these Russian boar to place on hunting lands to have a more violent, pure strain of the ones around here. I hunt them and I use a 30.06. I would NOT use a .22 on them. It will not penetrate the skull. The meat I've had does not taste gamey, but its not light colored like store bought pork either. Tastes like real lean beef. No a friend of mine from texas sent it to me, i believe he was the fellow who took the picture. they call this huntn' hogs texas style.


someone on hear mentioned about how hogs carry diseases. Well we had an experience with wild hogs bringing salmonella onto our farm and we had a bunch of cows and calves die due to this. this was years ago, my dh had all the barns full of calves giving them iv's to try and save them, the lots were full of cows laid out with iv's running in them. it was just awful. so we have a hug hate for wild hogs, they destroy our pastures, and just make a mess of things. one sow can give birth to over 20 piglets each year. just think about how quickly they can over populate and area.
