Dang! Now only if I had a gator to do that in. There has been some I have eaten that are not gamey but some were so maybe it's dependent on what they eat?
And I shouldn't use 'little' puppy I guess. She's a 50lb Great Pyrenees puppy. Not so little haha. She IS going to be getting a 'buddy' though. (one her size)
I think I better clean put some freezer space... and thanks for the link kawonu!!
Be careful if you choose to trap any wild hogs. In some states, inculding my home here in Kentucky, if you trap or snare a wild hog you are REQUIRED by law to kill it. They are a huge ecological problem and the state wants them GONE. It is illegal in Kentucky (and other states I would bet) to transport a life wild hog anywhere.
They are tasty. I have gotten one with a 30-06 and another with a .357 handgun. I wouldn't recomend a .22, it might kill it eventually but you will be chasing it down. Slugged shotguns work too.
Kentucky has no bag limits or season on wild hogs. Anywhere, anytime, anyplace.

I am so glad your pup is better!!! Have been reading this and whoa wild hogs, that is a scary thought! Hope you will be rid of them soon!! Take care!
Go to a store where they sell hunting supplies. Ask if you can hang up a flyer for free hog hunting. Leave a phone number so interested parties can call and setup a hunting date with you. I bet there are some out there that love to do it. I live out in the boonies and people ask all the time if there is something they can hunt on my land.

Yes, Brucellosis was the disease I was worried about. A Texas rancher contracted it last year from a feral hog he butchered and it's no fun to deal with. Recommended now is use of latex gloves, limited contact with reproductive organs, and careful blood cleanup when butchering a hog. Cooked meat is no problem.
Hog hunting is fun for lots of folks, but their dogs end up with bad, often fatal, injuries. Releasing feral hogs, a nonnative and invasive species, into the wild is just wrong. Please remember "the wild" is shrinking every minute and wild creatures have no place to go.
Hogs are omnivores, and chicken would be on the menu if easily caught. I could see hogs breaking into a chicken house more for chicken feed than for chickens. Recently I watched an episode of an investigation of crimes show where a human body was disposed of in a hog pen. Domestic hogs, and no evidence left.
If you have ever driven across a field rooted by hogs, you will know one more reason why ranchers and farmers hate the creatures. And there are lots more reasons.
My grandson killed a young hog night before last with his .243. I told him to leave it lay. There are only two creatures that I would say that about - feral hogs and starlings. Wasting meat is not our way.

You have to have a hunting permit you can hunt hog 24-7 in Texas. The are not considered game animals since they are feral. With in a hundred yards I've used a 30/30 with much sucess. Hogs in texas is a very big problem. Even though the hog is to big to eat it's best to render then room temp. Buzzards have to eat to.
I use a Chinaman SKS 7.62X39 jacketed hollow point, the one hog a got a shot on, ONE SHOT ONE KILL. I still have some hogs but they are giving my place a wide birth.
In La it is legal to take a hog 365 days a year. If no deer season is open they can be hunted at night.
