Wildfires and smoke

I have eight, plus 4 cats and two kids.
We have our first layer of important belongings packed, but can't find out where the d****d fire is !!!!!
Blanketed in smoke. Don't know what I'd do about the chickens.

Steve's Pets is taking pets for evacuees, but I am not sure if that includes chickens. But if the fire comes close to my house, Steve's is in danger too. Have you checked with Pasadena SPCA ?

Hi sbs,

I am in Altadena as well. Yesterday went okay, there was very little smoke at our place, left the mister on all day. 6 eggs from 8 chickens, so they didn't seem to be in trouble. But today I can barely see in front of my face, it is so smoggy.
Where in Altadena are you? Are you able to see the fire at all? My husband watched it all night, it had moved over the ridge, lots of flames. We are near the golf course.

We are near the golf course too!
I can't believe how smokey it is this morning. We can't see much of anything .
I hate the thought of just dumping the girls at the SPCA.I was thinking of bringing them to my inlaws house in the valley, but that would be without the coop. My DH has been tracking the fire online, we have had no news this morning though.

I'm going to PM you.

Oh my heart aches for all of you down there. Please stay safe and take everyone in the car. Get a dog crate for the chickens and keep it on top of the car just in case you need to get outa there in a hurry. We're slightly smokey up here from the Yosemite Fire, but thats over an hour plus away as the crow flies.

I use pet carriers for my chickens when I need to move them. A good cardboard box may also work. If you have a extra large dog crate too that is even better. Then at least you have some were to put them once you relocate.

I feel for you. We live further up the state but still feel the effects of the smoke.

SBS- congrats on your egg under duress. Isnt this smoke encredible?? I have been keeping my 5 wk olds inside. They hate being cooped up in a cardboard box- but it cant be helped! Keep cool all.

Darlasmum, they evacuated part of your area yesterday. Were you lucky to be far enough away,
How is it there today?

I wish I could keep my girls inside, but it just is not feasible , I guess they need to get used to this crazy So Cal heat anyway.

It's been bad all day. Chickens seem good, though.
Put a tarp on top of the run, and kept the mister on all day.

Thanks to Backyard Chicken forum for all of the amazing tips I could access that allowed me to build a really good structure.
And how incredible to find another forum member who lives only two blocks from me !

Cough, cough, hack , hack!! I am 5 mi south of the fire so am in no danger of the flames. The smoke and 100' temps will kill me first! A good breeze has come up since noon. I am not sure if this is a good thing or not. On the one hand it may cool things down abit, and clear out some of the smoke n ash. On the other hand it may whip up the flames. Any one need help? Coop space?
