I had to rescue this pretty fella from the chooks!

That snake is going to shed its skin soon. Did you notice the milky eyes?

Yes there quite a few snakes (and their shed skins) around here in the summer.

My chicks had a blast all summer chasing and harassing the snakes - Garters and Milk snakes. Those are the two most common here.

Getting crowded in there!

Every year the Barn Swallows raise a couple broods of chicks - usually about 5 at a time. I usually have about 3 or 4 pairs - last year though I only had the one pair raise youngsters.

This is not an entry, and it won’t qualify anyway because it’s a domestic animal, but I wanted to show you all.

Meet Flare. He leaves bad stuff in the water. The bad stuff goes up the pump to a tray of plants. The plants take up the bad stuff in the water, and return clean water to Flare.

It’s an interesting cycle called aquaponics.
