I think some people just don't like killing things? My uncle and brother are like that with spiders, I try to kill every spider I see but if they're around they save them and say that they deserve to live too:idunno
I understand that, but I don’t see how it’s a good idea to keep letting them reproduce with no boundaries. Spotted another rattlesnake by the barn just this morning. Doesn’t seem like they’re threatened in any way. Plus, there are tons of small rodents for them to eat out in the fields, so we are really only killing the few that stray too close to our animals. We leave nonvenomous snakes alone as they don’t pose as large a threat. I can’t see why rattlesnakes should be especially admired, so generally just curious I guess.
The only cameras I've ever used were a Canon rebel T7i, an 80D, an R5, and an R7. My favorite is the R5 but that should be no surprise as it is a full frame mirrorless camera with tons of great features but it also costs several thousand dollars.

As far as the two "normal price" cameras. The T7i and 80D are very similar in performance but the 80D has weather sealing, a better button layout, the ability to adjust microfocus, and is more configurable. It can be had for ~$450 used and is one I definitely would recommend. Though I do feel Nikon is a little better value for your money.
I have never had a Nikon before. You have definitely peaked my interest though. Its honestly pretty hard to settle with one camera…there are just SO many options. The only other camera I’ve looked into is a Sony Alpha 1, but those are mighty expensive too. Appreciate the advice…guess I’ll just keep looking.
The R7 just released and you get a lot of good features and I think it is the best aps-c camera at its price point but it's still very expensive costing $1500.

Often times upgrading the lens is what gives you better "image quality" for your money.
Thank you. The main reason I want to upgrade is cause my camera is old and I’ve been wanting something that can take videos. I’ll definitely look into those. I’ve heard some good stuff about the canon R5. I do like that it’s full-frame. Oh and have you ever taken videos on it? If so, how did that turn out?
I really like your lower angle rattle snake image. The owls are cool too. Been wanting to shoot an owl but I never have.
The barn owls here have started nesting, so I’ve been privileged to see them. Night photography isn’t really my thing though, it’s pretty tough. You really killed it on the silhouettes pics!
What camera are you currently using?
I’m using the Canon Rebel Xsi. It’s from my dad and a rather old thing lol.

I definitely wouldn't want to steer you away from canon, especially if you are already familiar with their operation. It's just most people are looking for the best "value" or bang for their buck and canon is not the best choice for that in my opinion. They make great gear but you pay a little more for it. Sony A1 would be an awesome camera. If I were to ditch Canon I would likely move to Sony. I guess your budget will be the biggest determination in what you can get.

I went from shooting the R5 then back to my 80D right before I sold it. It was like going back to the stone age, lol. Okay, maybe not quite that bad... but the animal eye tracking autofocus on the new mirrorless Canons is like cheating.

I haven't done any video with it but the R5 is capable of shooting BBC quality video, lol. It can shoot 8k 30 RAW and 4k 120 but the files are ginormous. A$300 256G CFexpress card only holds 12 minutes of 8K RAW or 4K 120fps video.... ouch. But for more normal video (4K 30 or 60) it holds a few hours of video. The R5 is prone to overheating though.

I think most all new cameras will shoot in 4k30 and have more than acceptable video quality for YouTube and stuff.

Moneys not a huge issue but I’d find it hard in myself to pay upwards $6000 for a camera. Seems that that’s the “average” price you’ll see for a Sony A1. Definitely leaning toward the Canon R5 for now. Appreciate your knowledge and advice.

If you like shooting animals and wildlife then you will definitely like the R5. The 45mp sensor lets you crop in a LOT (or print very large) and the fast frame rate (12fps mechanical 20 electronic shutter) means you won't miss much when you keep the shutter release held down.

I used an EF 100-400 IS II with the EF-RF adapter on mine and it worked very well. I recently purchased an RF 100-500 and it is a great lens and I think it is a tiny bit sharper than the already sharp 100-400 II. It's quite a bit lighter too and has a little better image quality when using a teleconverter. I would like to have a big prime lens one day (500F4, 600F4, or maybe even a 400 2.8) but I dont think I would use them as much as I want because of how big and cumbersome they are. I think Canon has a 500 F4.5 DO in the works and it will be more compact lighter weight big prime.

The only con if you wanted to use the R5 primarily for video is the overheating issue. While I don't think its as much of an issue at more normal settings (4k30p) I'm pretty sure this can be alleviated by using a Ninja V external video monitor.
