Will a 6' high privacy fence keep in chickens?

6 feet stop my Orpington and Plymouth Rock. We've a RIR that can make the fence using her feet to clamer up the last 6 inches flapping madly.

It will if you clip their wings so they don't ''fly the coop''!

Be sure & only clip 1 wing. Clipping both will allow them to still get altitude. Clipping 1 will get their lift off balance & keep them from flying.

My lavender orpingtons are 19 weeks old and they can get over a 4' fence easily. But as they get older they will get too fat to get up that high. However I have not clipped their wings yet.

My other breeds, white leghorns, anconas and EE will fly up to the 7' coop roof even with one clipped wing.

I would clip the wing so there wouldn't be any surprises! One of our half blind doms got her self on top of a 6 ft fence, We clipped the wings on all the girls after that.

Thank you everyone. We're talking 6 hens max, so wing clipping would be easy to stay on top of.

If they are orpingtons, they will not *want* to scale a 6' fence. However, a word of caution, one of my orpingtons was attacked by a fox in recent weeks (I don't clip my girls wings). Three of my girls flew over my 6' fencing to get away from the danger of the fox (they were the clever ones

).

I managed to save my hen from Mr F and nurse her back to almost full health. As for the three who flew away? (One Marans, one Old English Game bantam and one Barbu d'Anvers bantam), they all found their way home again before nightfall - and were quite indignant that their run was locked

To be really honest, I've only ever clipped one bird - my OEG bantam; never really needed to because my girls know where home is, know where food/water is and know where they are safe. But, I do understand your apprehensions.

I have 4' fencing and my Buff. Orp's cant get over it. Never clipped or anything. But then we spoil em, so maybe they just dont need too?

Here is my White Leghorn rooster Foghorn - with his wing clipped he flew up to the top of the coop - it's 7' tall.

My Leghorn hens ended up on my neighbor's roof (a two story house!!) And just so you know, chickens do not respond to threats, ex. Get down NOW or I will spank your butt!! I clipped those suckers and never looked back! I still clip them to be on the safe side but they seem afraid of heights now.
