Will a chihuahua kill a chicken?

My Chihuahua Mutt (Malchi or Maltese Chihuahua 'designer dog' -belonged to my sons ex gf who asked me to watch him for two weeks...3 years ago)

He took off after the rooster the first time he got to come help at Moms. Poor rooster was running as fast as he could (he was about 8 years old at the time) The dog was so happy to have some one to play chase with, he was bouncing high in the air doing bunny hops after him. Both my mom and I were laughing so hard we could not even call him back-not that he would have come. The poor rooster made it back to us after running the parameter of the property. We thought he was going to drop dead of a heart attack

After that escapade, the rooster said he had had enough of that white mutt. He now routinely shows off how big he is and tries to bluff the dog all the time. The last time the dog was on the chickens side of the fence, we had to keep him safe from the rooster.

But that being sad, him chasing a hen could hurt them just by their panic to get away from him

Our polish hen had her head de-feathered by the chihuahua we had. Although, the dog was just a baby & thought the birds were great toys. The bad thing we found was that the chihuahua would chase the birds into our terrier's area, and when the birds & chihuahua were riled up, our terrier thought the birds would be fun toys too

although he leaves them alone otherwise. I'm sure that if I hadn't come running out when I heard the birds screaming, the chihuahua would have killed her. The bird was a hatchery-raised hen, and easily spooked, whenever something frightened her, or came up behind her, she'd freeze with her wings half-out & her butt down, making a perfect target for the chihuahua to get on her back & start ripping out feathers.

Fortunately, that's all the dog did, there was no blood or anything, just a half-bald polish. The biggest issue with the chihuahua is that once they're focused on something, it takes alot to break that attention. We'd have to shoot our air-soft gun in the air for her to stop harrassing the birds, as yelling never got her attention.

Our neighbor's have a small weinerdog-cross that nearly killed another bird, had ripped out all the tail & lower back feathers, and gave her a huge gash in her back/tail area. If I had been smart, I would've shot the dog with our air-soft gun, but when I saw it dragging my girl to the hole under the fence, I freaked, grabbed the dog & tossed it over the fence (its a 4' fence) back into his own yard.

my shi-tzu killed one chicken and malled 2 others! Yeah she is a tea cup shi-tzu too! All my hens are bigger than her....but with that being said those were the girls that jumped the fence and were not protected by a roo, my dog won't even think about attacking with a roo around!

Eeep, all this talk of chicken killing chihuahuas is making me really glad I didn't buy any bantams! My girls should get as big as, or bigger than my two chihuahuas. One of the dogs has already shown that she'd take out one of the chicks if she had the opportunity. I have to wonder if she will still be aggressive when they are full grown but I don't think after reading this thread that I'll take the chance.
