Will a coyote come into my property?

well I'm missing one rooster it's been three days since I've seen him. Will a coyote or a fox come into my property and kill a rooster? One day he was there and the next he was gone no trace what so ever. They do have a coop and we do have coyotes and foxes in our area. If they don't come into the property will a rooster go to another property because I know our neighbors have chickens to. If they do come into the property how can I stop them? I'm just dumbfounded because there's no feather no blood no prints it's like he just vanished into thin air.

Sadly, yes. Hawk, fox, coyote... you name it. They do not always leave any trace, either, particularly if they are able to just carry him off. You need secure fencing (with a cover if hawks are an issue in your area). I'm sorry for the loss of your rooster... always sad to lose a bird.

I'm so sorry to hear you lost your boy!
We know when coyotes come through our neighborhood because outdoor cats go missing.

I've been told by my neighbors that hardware cloth with a 1ft skirt secured to the ground is usually enough to protect here. But we live in a somewhat populated area.

I am going through this mess in a rural area. A Red Fox is coming in during the day and night and has taken two roosters. It main targets of interest I think are rabbits and mice but it took an old rooster on ground. What is typical for many chicken keepers is I have seen this particular fox only once. I can tell from a distance by behavior of rabbits and cackling of chickens in pens that the fox is present. It is easy to smell fox after it passes through. My setting is extremely weedy.

When we lived in an urban setting with chickens a fox and a coyote where after flock as well. Bobcats actually on university property where I work in Jefferson City, our state capitol.

Have you gone and asked your neighbors about seeing your rooster?

I know someone (we aren't close) who kept the rooster that came onto her property. The person said the owner of the rooster should have done a better job of keeping him locked up. He was beautiful. The rooster eventually ended up on the table. That's the type of person this is.

Please ask your neighbors. It's possible your guy wandered over there and they put him in protective custody.

And as others have said, do what you can to predator proof your property. Even if means spilling urine around your borders or near your coop. Human urine works too.

And pay attention to the behavior of your animals. It's a learning process. I hear different noises, I go out and look. I am outside often anyways. I have flying predators that are constantly doing leisurely fly-bys. They see me and take off, casually of course, like that was the plan all along.
