Will ducks not lay eggs in the same places that chickens do?

We have two ducks now and they are in the interim pen with 3 chickens, the chickens lay their eggs in the nesting box. The one duck who is laying (a Cayuga) just lays them any old place she pleases. Once they are on their pond and have their own nesting box will they lay in there or still wander the property and just drop them wherever? Oh speaking of which do I need to do something special for a Cayuga and Whistling duck as far as a nest goes? Something elevated or in a tree?

We have muscovy and magpie ducks. They will lay in the same place for a few days in a row but other days it truly is an egg hunt. We will find eggs just in the middle of their yard, some like to make nests in the compost pile, or behind a shed. They tend to lay in areas that they feel safe and could potentially be a nest to hatch ducklings. We also had one magpie that did lay a few days in the coop but has since stopped. Hope this helps. Edited husband just found a few days worth of magpie eggs in the larger nesting box in our coop.
