Apparently it is delayed (thankfully), but still a future threat. Some senators are trying to push for small growers (for co-ops, farmer's markets, etc) to be exempt. I think that they should keep their paws out of what I grow! Kinda like how raw milk is illegal in many states.

This is the impression I got as well.
I have seen NO indication that anything in this new bill would affect a small farm or a private garden. If it came down to that, I'd be right there fighting against it and engaging in a little civil disobedience too!!
Who is for and against a bill is often as political as anything else. That is not indicative of whether or not I support a bill.
I'm having a hard time finding the part that addresses supplements by doing a keyword seach. Can you give me a title and section reference so I can read that part?
They introduced a much more strident Food, Drug and Cosmetic Safety Modernization Bill several years ago that I was opposed to because it was too heavy-handed and restrictive. And it was dropped.
There is a Q&A section on that page. You can post a question or read replies on the implications of the bill. Very interesting if you're sincerely interested in this bill.

I read the summary and I don't see where it makes growing your own food illegal. It presents many things to improve the safety of food and awareness about food safety. I think setting standards for safe food production is reasonable. If you are selling food you grow, you may fall under the scope of this bill.
Yes I don't see anything that would prevent anyone raising their own food. Food safety legislation has been in the works for a while now.

"The Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (FD&C Act) states "Except for purposes of section 201(g), a dietary supplement shall be deemed to be a food within the meaning of this Act." Link to FD&C http://bit.ly/1SuAr4 You can find the citation in section 2 (Definitions)"
There is always more to a bill than meets the eye. Read the 'additional questions' in the link. This quote is from one of the answers.
Just curious as I could have sworn that the outbreaks of E coli, etc were from LARGE US Inspected (supposedly) farms... not the little guys that eat the product themselves... was that just me & I read all those outbreak reports wrong?
I tough e-coli was from farm practices rather then the size. I will always have a garden, count on that, my kids will have one too. We as humans have a right to healthy foods we don't have to pay for, tax my for other things but leave my food alone!
I also heard that it will apply to if you grow your own foods, and then trade or give excess to your friends/family, that doing that will not be allowed under this bill.
I haven't read it yet. But I did just read about a govt. program that is helping individuals set up to produce food locally. Fresher, less expensive (shipping costs), and better foods. Low/no interest loans if you produce any kind of food that is sold ONLY locally. I've been trying to get in touch with my county extension agent to find out what I need to do to raise meat birds.
Yes the two HRs have been around before and started firing up again right before the First lady planted her garden at the white house...I wrote the President and told him to go check his staff because if not, his wife's new garden could quickly be illegal. hahahaha
