Will my chickens lay in the winter?

I live in central New York, and in May purchased a group of brahmas australorps and orpingtons. I chose these breeds because I was under the impression that they laid throughout the winter (especially the brahmas). A friend recently told me that none of them would lay when the days got too short. Is this true?

Yours will likely lay through the winter, or at least part way through it. They will slow down, however, as the days are shorter, and with shorter daylight hours, hens don't lay as well. My hens, which usually lay 5-6 eggs a week in the summer, slow to 3-4 a week in the winter. They may stop laying because of molting, even if the daylight hours don't affect them. Chickens often molt in the wintertime or late fall. If not molting, you'll probably still get some eggs.
