I have a newly hatched (within the last hour) gosling with a protruding navel. The yolk sac is not hanging out, there is no blood, and it is totally closed. The navel just looks swollen and it is about the size of a small grape. I'm assuming this is part of the yolk sac.

Should he/she be alright?

No good prognosis with an exposed navel. Try dipping in iodine and trying to keep clean. Hard to do I know. I hate to say but I would guess it will live 3-5 days. Good luck!!! Marcel

I'd call a vet, a farm vet if you can, and see if they have any suggestions. They may tell you to just keep it clean, or that it will "heal" itself. Or that it needs to be seen.

GOOD NEWS............... I think?

The baby's navel is half the size it was yesterday. He's up, drinking, running around and stepping all over his newly hatched sibling.
