Will NOT be buying TSC feeds again

Whoa, 36% is a supplement - definitely not a feed. Wow. I'd go with the 17 and you can use the supplement (which should contain some soy or meat products, probably fish meal?) to bulk up protein if you want.

Personally I'd use the 17% and separate offer oyster shell/granite grit mixed in a seperate container.

If you're raising chicks, I wouldn't use either feed they offer. Period. I'd use the Purina (starter, then starter/grower or grower) until you get them to four months - then go to the mill food with a transition period. There's something to be said for your birds looking great. I'd put that over waste.

On the game bird, I used a game bird starter for my chicks this year and I really liked it. Then again, I am very very experienced at spotting and treating (or using probiotics for) coccidiosis before it gets past the first few droppings. But I found that their feathering was absolutely beautiful, their bodies were lovely, and because it was starter it still had the right balances for growth of the body/organ development. I'm looking into their growth formula. I did used to use some of their breeder/layer when I had show chickens who weren't breeding well otherwise. These were the complete feeds. I used gamecock (and a vitamin package) for my show cockerels. This year I'm likely to do something a little differently.

The 36% is the GM Base which is for grind and mix. Kent makes a 20% Chick-Go starter which is an excellent feed. You can get the high flyer in medicated and non medicated all the way up to 28%.

After reading this thread, I switched from TSC Dumor feed to a locally made organic feed. I gave it to my chicks and they went nuts for it. They weren't just scratching at it or knocking it over, they were really eating it!!! The best part is that it is cheaper than what I buying at TSC, and he carried it out to my car!!

I have bought TSC feed before when my feedstore was out. I hated it! It just didn't smell or look right. I thought it may have just been a bad bag, but the nest one i got was the same way and after that, i was done. I use Purnia Layena pellets now.

I have found that TSC feed causes smelly poop, bigger turds, and my birds don't like it as much. I stopped buying it a long time ago! It's expensive, too. I buy 25 pounds of broiler mash (20% protein) made up of freshly ground grains at my local feed store for $4 a bag. The scratch grains are whole grains except for the corn and it's 9% protein and also $4 a bag for 25 pounds.

When I had about 15 birds, they would eat through 25 pounds of TSC brand feed every week. Now I have 50 birds and 2 ducks, and most of the birds are in that fast growing teenage stage, and all total they eat 25 pounds of mash a week. They even waste a lot by kicking it onto the ground, since it's powder and it flings. Can you believe that 52 birds eat the same amount of quality feed as 15 birds would eat of Dumor brand??

I was spending so much on feed every month. Now I spend about $20 a month on quality feed and scratch for treats. (I also mix in oyster shells...you can buy a large amount of them at the feed store for $4, compared to the little $6 bag at TSC.)

Andora, If only we could all be as lucky to have a good feed mill close. Who do you use? We actually use McCauley's for horse feed all the way up here in PA. If I was still home (Versailles) I'd go to woodford mill and save a ton of money. Alas, I'm stuck up here with not a lot of choice...

Totally miss being there some days!!

I just got back from TSC with my bag of Dumor. I wish I had read all this first. Dang it.

I checked the Blue Seal site & TS is my closest dealer for their feed. I'll give it a try. I don't have a problem with Dumor, but if I can put less feed in and get more eggs out, I'm all for it.

Well, after switching back to the burkmanns feed last week, I still have half a bag left. Now I consider that normal instead of going thru a bag a week it is taking two weeks. My chicks are 7 weeks today. Smell is way down and poops are much smaller. Next week I hope I can buy from my local mill if they have any when I need it.

I shop at Woodford Feed in Versailles! It's the best store around. We're getting ready to move to Richmond (hopefully) and I don't think they have a good mill around there, just TSC. I might have to make a trip back to Versailles once a month just to buy feed...
