I have a little bantam chick with spraddle leg on one side. Repeated attempts at making a brace with bandaids keep coming off. Will the condition correct itself do you think?
Thank you B. Saffles Farms! I tried bandaids, pipe cleaner, but couldn't think of what else to try. Poor tiny chick doesn't like my attempts very much, but I will try duct tape now.
For spraddle leg, I find a thin rubber band works best. If you do the bandaid or tape route they can't walk or use either leg and tend to stay in one spot - so what I've found works best is to take a thin rubber band and cut it so you have a "stretchy string" then tie the legs together leaving the normal distance. You can tie a simple knot on the first leg then tie to the next leg and cut off any extra. This will help hold the spraddle leg in place but still allow the chick to walk and keeps both legs under it while still giving it the momentum of being able to move the legs forward. I've "fixed" many spraddle legs this way. Usually only has to stay on about a week if caught early. By the end of the week the chick is used to standing and walking on both feet. Do be careful not to tie the band too tightly and to check it every once in a while to be sure the chick hasn't pulled it too tight around its ankles and it's not cutting off circulation.
