I have not noticed any real intelligent life happening with my flock

I have tried to remove any "jumping blocks" they have as to escape the coop- but they still seem to find ways. We need to keep the pen top open (it has a 4ft fence) because of the foliage we have in the fenced area and the trees that are inside it- as well as us walking around in the fenced in area.

The dog has killed 1 chick already- I had 1 days without an escape- but then they figured out another way to escape.

Once my roos get big enough will they take on the dog if he gets close? Or are we doomed to dead chickens on our walk way as a nice (unwanted) gift from the dog....

Nope! The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence

Get some deer netting and cut the roll in half so you have two 24" rols and run it around the inside of the fencing (bread ties will hold it ) this is enough of a barrier to keep eveyone in till they are too big to escape their prison

No. A rooster protects his flock by staying vigilant to the presence of potential predators and calling to them to run for cover if he sees anything out of place. He is no match for most predators in an actual combat situation.
